Despite concerns about parking, the Pico Rivera City Council has approved a three-story, 45-unit condominium project next to the newly opened roadway underpass and railroad bridge on Durfee Avenue.
The council voted 5-0 Tuesday for Costa Mesa-based Warmington Residential’s project on a 2.5-acre project at 4820 Durfee Ave., on a vacant former industrial site.
“This is a great project in regard to rehabilitating that section of Pico Rivera that’s been blighted for quite some time,” Councilman Andrew Lara said. “It goes hand-in-hand with the underpass.”
The only question is parking, Lara said.
“There at Durfee, there are longstanding parking issues,” he said. “I support this project, but I would like it to go to the [City Council] ad hoc committee on parking.”
Lara and other council members said parking has been an issue for the businesses to the south on Durfee.
Michael Garcia, director of community and economic development, said the homeowners association for the development will have rules requiring that garages be used for parking, not storage.
There also may be answers in the future, such as changing from parallel to angled parking to gain more spots, Councilman Erik Lutz said.
The development will have 97 parking spaces — 96 are required.
But as far as the development, Lutz called it “exciting.”
“Everybody likes to believe in the American dream,” Lutz said. “Part of that is to own your very own property. This project will be a great opportunity to welcome new residents who will be homeowners.”
