Seven people died after a ferry gangway collapsed Saturday in Georgia, according to state officials. Authorities were still working to determine what caused the collapse and how many people were injured.

The collapse happened on Sapelo Island, one of the barrier islands along Georgia’s roughly 100 miles of coastline.

The crowd was gathered for an annual cultural celebration of the Gullah Geechee people, who have inhabited Sapelo since enslaved people were forcibly taken from Africa.

A gangway at the island’s Marsh Landing Dock collapsed about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Media reports indicate that several people were seriously injured.
