



LOUISVILLE, Ky. >> Jess Mruzik made 29 kills with a .315 hitting percentage, and Katie Schumacher-Cawley became the first female coach to win a NCAA volleyball championship as Penn State defeated Louisville 3-1 in Sunday’s final.
The Nittany Lions (35-2) earned their record eighth national championship and first since 2014 under the third-year coach, who has led the team while undergoing treatment for breast cancer that was diagnosed in September. Schumacher-Cawley has nonetheless conducted practices between treatments, a determined and emotional journey that provided a rallying point for players and garnered widespread support.
Penn State completed its mission with aggressive play that kept Louisville (30-6) on the defensive to win 25-23, 32-34, 25-20 and 25-17. The Nittany Lions’ third-set rebound was especially critical after the Cardinals won an epic second set 34-32 by rallying from several deficits and fighting off 10 Nittany Lion set points.

Magic center Wagner will miss remainder of season >> Orlando center Moritz Wagner will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, that news coming to the injury-riddled Magic one day after they pulled off one of the more improbable wins in franchise history.
Wagner underwent an MRI exam on Sunday to confirm the tear. He will require surgery and then a recovery period of several months.

Texans WR Dell released from hospital >> Texans receiver Tank Dell has been released after an overnight stay in the hospital and was traveling back to Houston after sustaining a severe knee injury in Saturday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Right now, we still will be evaluating to see where he is,” Coach Ryans said. “He’s still meeting with doctors to see what’s next for him. But it is a significant knee injury.”
Dell was injured on a 30-yard touchdown catch in Houston’s 27-19 loss Saturday. He was coming across the back of the end zone and made the spectacular catch on a pass from C.J. Stroud before colliding with Houston teammate Jared Wayne on the way to the ground.

Third baseman Urshela and A’s finalize contract >> Third baseman Gio Urshela and the A’s finalized a $2.15 million, one-year contract.
Third base was a top priority as the club builds its roster to play at least the next three seasons in West Sacramento The A’s hope to build a new ballpark and move to Las Vegas.
The 33-year-old Urshela batted .250 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs last season for Detroit and Atlanta, earning $1.5 million. A slick defensive player, he has also played for the New York Yankees, Cleveland, Toronto, Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels during a nine-year major league career.
Phillies acquire left-hander Luzardo from Marlins >> The Phillies acquired left-hander Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins on Sunday, the team announced.
Miami received two prospects, outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba.
Philadelphia also acquired catcher Paul McIntosh in the trade.
Luzardo, who has battled various injuries throughout his career, recorded a 5.00 ERA over 12 starts for Miami in 2024.
Rangers trade Lowe to Nationals >> The Texas Rangers acquired left-handed reliever Robert Garcia from the Washington Nationals in a trade for past Gold Glove and Silver Slugger first baseman Nathaniel Lowe.
Garcia had 75 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings over 72 appearances for the Nationals last season.
Texas is parting with Lowe after acquiring slugging corner infielder Jake Burger from Miami for three minor league players during the winter meetings less than two weeks ago.

Langer wins playoff over Woods to win PNC Championship >> Tiger Woods’ son hit the shot of his life for his first hole-in-one. Bernhard Langer hit the shot that mattered, an 18-foot eagle putt in a playoff to beat Woods and son Charlie in a terrific duel at the PNC Championship.
Langer and son Jason won for the second straight year, and the 67-year-old German now has won back-to-back at the PNC Championship with two sons as his partners.
They put on quite a show at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, particularly when 15-year-old Charlie hit 7-iron on the par-3 fourth hole for his first ace, getting a huge hug from his father and a reminder that he would have to buy a round of drinks for everyone.

Vonn regains her former speed in comeback race >> Lindsey Vonn took just a handful of gates this weekend to recover from a poor start and rediscover her former speed when she placed 14th in a super-G.
The 40-year-old Vonn lost time at the start of the race but then was competitive with the top-five finishers the rest of the way down.
Since Vonn hadn’t raced in six years, the American had to use the new wild card rule for former champions that enabled her to start No. 31. But that’s still long after the top-ranked skiers start, leaving her with a bumpier and more challenging course.t
Still, Vonn was the only finisher with a bib higher than 20 to finish in the top 15.
