If you or your child finds yourself with excess candy after a night of trick-or-treating, Pechanga Resort Casino will trade it for kids golf lessons.

Each child who brings a bucket or bag of candy to the Journey at Pechanga pro shop through Nov. 22 will receive a free golf lesson valued at $29 at Journey at Pechanga golf course. The candy donation is part of Operation Shoebox, which sends care packages to U.S. troops.

The parents of the candy donors can sign up to be contacted for the free golf lesson after depositing the candy at the shop. The lesson, which consists of a warm-up period, golf swing mechanics and putting or chipping, will take place between Nov. 28 and Dec. 31.

Randy Chang, director of instruction at the Journey Golf Academy at Pechanga Resort Casino, has been doing the event for five years. He said the program is intended for novice players, but others can also benefit.

“We have some golfers that already have experience, and they get to understand how to improve their game,” Chang said in a phone interview.

He said he has yet to encounter kids unwilling to give up their candy for a golf lesson, and it is a teachable moment for the kids who are learning to play golf while also learning to share their candy..
