New York safety Ashtyn Davis, a Santa Cruz native, recorded two interceptions in the Jets’ 32-20 win over the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday.

They were his first two interceptions this season. He has eight in his five-year pro career.

In a post-game interview with SNY’s Jeane Coakley, Davis said he was pleased with his team’s defensive showing.

“That’s something we preach, effort, technique, violence, all kinds of stuff like that,” he said. “And I think it showed up on tape today. I think that the biggest thing was getting back to the basics and having fun. A lot of celebrations today, a lot of smiles. I think that’s when we’re playing our best football.”

His first takeaway came with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter, on quarterback Tyler Huntley’s pass intended for receiver Jaylen Waddle at the Jets’ 10-yard line.

His second pick was made in the end zone on an ill-advised pass intended for Waddle with 33 seconds left in the half. Davis returned it 18 yards before dumping it off to cornerback D.J. Reed, who gained another 24 yards. Davis was flagged for an illegal forward pass, and the Jets took over at their own 12-yard line after the penalty was enforced.

Davis, a former standout for Santa Cruz High and the NCAA Division I Cal Bears, also made two pass deflections and a team-high eight tackles, seven of which were solo stops.

The Jets (5-12 overall) finished their season in third place in the AFC’s East Division, behind Buffalo (13-4) and Miami (8-9), and ahead of New England (4-13).

“I think it speaks to the whole locker room, offense, special teams, nobody in this locker room quit,” Davis said. “Obviously, we’re not Super Bowl champions, but I love being a part of this team. I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
