Watch out for recovery scams
Three in 10 United States consumers have reported losing money to online scams since 2020. What’s worse is when fraudsters target victims again with promises of recovering or refunding the money. When scammers are successful with their con, they often sell the victims’ information online, which allows for further scams.
Using specific data about the amount the victim lost, subsequent fraudsters reach out to the victim, pretending to represent government agencies, consumer advocacy groups or even the original fraudulent company. They claim they can help recover your money but demand upfront processing fees or financial details before they can help you out. Legitimate organizations will never charge upfront fees to help recover funds.
Research the organization independently and conduct an internet search using the organization’s name followed by “scam” to ensure you’re not being conned again.
