APTOS >> Receiver Brandon George had a career game, and the Cabrillo College football team earned its first win, a 40-7 stomping of Gavilan in Golden Coast Conference action Saturday night.

George, a sophomore out of St. Francis High, finished with six catches for 189 yards and three touchdowns. It was his second 100-yard outing this season.

Cabrillo (1-5, 1-2) looks for its first win streak Saturday, when it plays at Hartnell (1-4, 0-1) in Salinas at 6 p.m.The Seahawks carry a ton of momentum into their rivalry game.

“This was big,” Seahawks coach Justin Hansen said. “The kids work hard and sometimes you don’t get anything to show for it, on the scoreboard or in the paper. … It definitely felt good to get that reward postgame to playing good football. This is a tough group of kids. They’ve grown on me. We gone through stuff I’ve never had to deal with as a head coach, and we’ve gone through it together. This is a special group.”

The Seahawks produced 447 yards on offense, and limited the Rams (2-5, 1-2) to 166.

Freshman quarterback Jamari Vaughns completed 13 of 21 attempts for 240 yards and three scores with no interceptions.

“Brandon and Jamari had a great connection,” Hansen said. “They have all season, but this was definitely his (Brandon’s) most prolific of the season. Jamari shined on some of our plays that were on schedule, and a couple of plays that weren’t on schedule worked out for us. Brandon is a great guy once he gets the ball in his hands.”

Cabrillo rushed for 203 yards on 43 carries. Sophomore running back Peyton Hatten led the way with 26 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown, and teammate Ambrose Conteh had nine carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

George gave Cabrillo the early lead. He scored in the first minute of the game after hauling in a 26-yard pass from Vaughns to cap a three-play, 53-yard drive.

Gavilan knotted the score at 7-all when quarterback Mason Pound scored on a 52-yard run.

George scored on receptions of 36 and 68 yards in the second quarter, which sandwiched a 17-yard scoring from Hatten, and the Seahawks carries a 28-7 lead into the half.

Cabrillo earned two points on a safety in the third quarter.

Martin Magana-Ramirez booted a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Conteh capped scoring with a 7-yard run with 7:18 on the clock.

Sophomore linebacker Ben Lucchesi led the Seahawks with seven tackles, including a pair of sacks. Sophomore linebacker Tosin Alade had six tackles with a sack, and freshman linebacker DJ Gomez made five stops.

Sophomore defensive lineman Michael Thomas made three tackles and also recorded a sack for the Seahawks.
