



Lynn Biyendolo scored 42 seconds into the match and the United States beat Australia 2-1 on Sunday in the SheBelieves Cup.
Michelle Cooper scored her first international goal in her second appearance for the U.S., which improved to 2-0 in the four-team round-robin tournament at Glendale, Ariz.
Biyendolo’s goal was the fastest by a U.S. player since Ashley Hatch scored 24 seconds into a match in November 2021, also against Australia.
Biyendolo, formerly Lynn Williams, was married in the offseason. It was her 22nd international goal.
Michelle Heyman scored in the 80th minute for Australia.
Cooper’s goal in the 68th minute made it 2-0.
The final SheBelieves matches will be played Wednesday in San Diego. The United States plays Japan and Colombia faces Australia. The winner of the tournament, now in its 10th season, is determined by accumulated points.

Cal women fall to Virginia Tech >> Cal was down three points with 13 seconds left and Ioanna Krimili hit a running jumper from deep but her toe was on the line. The Golden Bears got the ball back down three with 10 seconds left but were unable to hit the game-tying shot and came up just short, losing 87-84 at Virginia Tech.
The Hokies (17-10, 8-8 ACC) snapped the Bears’ (22-7, 10-6 ACC) three-game winning streak.
Marta Suarez finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to lead four Bears in double figures. Krimili added 19 points with four triples and Kayla Williams added 17 points to go along with five assists.
Stanford blown out by Virginia >> Kymora Johnson, Virginia’s 5-foot-7 sophomore guard, scored a season-high 33 points to go with 12 assists and eight rebounds while leading the Cavaliers (14-14, 6-10 ACC) to an 89-69 victory over Stanford (14-13, 6-10), which trailed 25-9 after the first period.
The Cardinal got team-high totals of 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from sophomore forward Courtney Ogden in the loss. Brookie Demetre added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists.
No. 13 N.C. State beats No. 1 Notre Dame in double OT >> Zoe Brooks scored a career-high 33 points to help No. 13 N.C. State (22-5, 14-2 ACC) beat top-ranked Notre Dame 104-95 at home in double overtime, ending the Fighting Irish’s 19-game winning streak while keeping alive their hopes to share the ACC title.
The Wolfpack had hung on in a game featuring 21 lead changes while denying the Irish (24-3, 15-1) the chance to clinch the ACC regular-season title outright.
NO. 3 UCLA rallies to beat IOWA >> Elina Aarnisalo made two free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining to give No. 3 UCLA a 67-65 comeback win over Iowa.
Lauren Betts had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Bruins (26-1, 14-1 Big Ten), who trailed by 12 points twice in the third quarter.

Bell wins NASCAR Atlanta in OT >> Christopher Bell edged Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson in overtime in another close NASCAR Cup Series finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Bell led only the final lap in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and had a slight edge on the outside when the caution light came on in overtime following a wreck by Josh Berry.
Austin Cindric led in his Team Penske Ford before he and William Byron, the Daytona 500 winner, wrecked with three laps remaining, setting up the overtime.

Ovechkin pulls closer to Gretzky with hat trick >> Alex Ovechkin scored his 880th, 881st and 882nd career goals to record a hat trick and move 13 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record and give the Washington Capitals a 7-3 victory over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, moving back atop the league standings.
Pickard became the 181st goaltender Ovechkin has scored on, already the most of any player after Ovechkin broke Jaromir Jagr’s mark earlier last month. With his 134th game-winning goal, he also tied Jagr for the most in NHL history.
Golf
Yin wins LPGA Thailand >> Angel Yin won for the second time on the LPGA Tour, making birdie on the 18th hole for a 7-under 65 that was just enough to hold off hard-charging Akie Iwai of Japan in the Honda LPGA Thailand.
Yin got her birdie to finish at 28-under 260.
There have been only six lower 72-hole scores in LPGA history, with Sei Young Kim holding the record of 257, set at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic in 2018.
Campbell captures Mexico Open title >> Brian Campbell cashed in on a huge break when his tee shot in a playoff bounced out of the trees and back into play, leading to a birdie on the second extra hole to win the Mexico Open over Aldrich Potgieter.
Campbell, who closed with a 1-under 70 at Vidanta Vallarta, won for the first time since he turned pro a decade ago.

Bregman homers in Red Sox debut >> Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer as part of a three-hit day in his spring training debut with the Boston Red Sox, launching a drive over the left-field wall in the second inning against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Bregman also had a single in the first inning and a double off the fence in the fourth. The two-time All-Star signed a $120 million, three-year deal with Boston this month after spending the first nine years of his career with the Houston Astros.
