The Valparaiso Family YMCA will begin a phased reopening Tuesday under the guidance of state and local health authorities. The first phase will include programs for youth. Fun Days for school-age youth will run through May 29. It offers a safe place for care, structured activity and facilitates E-Learning. The East Chicago Public Library is now offering curbside delivery services of books, movies and magazines for patrons. Home delivery services will be available to residents with disabilities and seniors 65 and older starting Tuesday. The main library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, and the Robert A. Pastrick Branch, 1008 W. Three Chesterton High School seniors have been named National Merit Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Gavin K Dooley of Westville received a National Merit $2500 Scholarship. His award is supported by National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s own funds. Dooley plans to study mathematics at University of Notre Dame. Gabriel P. Kroeger of Chesterton received a National Merit $2500 Scholarship underwritten by Occidental Petroleum Corp. Kroeger plans to study computer science at the University of Alabama. Aidan S. Li of Chesterton received a National Merit $2500 Scholarship. His award is supported by National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s own funds. Li plans to study software engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Merrillville Community School Corp. is still accepting online kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year. Parents with children age 5 by Aug. 1, can start the application process at www.mvsc.k12.in.us. Once the application is confirmed, parents will receive a packet of supplies and materials to help prepare their children over the summer months for the upcoming school year. Parents also will receive a registration packet that should be completed and returned during the kindergarten orientation that will occur prior to the start of school. Horizon Bank has donated $14,000 to the United Ways of Lake and Porter counties to bolster their network of social services to alleviate COVID-19 economic pressures on Northwest Indiana households. The donation will go to support programming to help meet immediate needs such as food insecurities, rental and mortgage payments and job placement services. Lake and Porter counties are providing resource guides to local and state services to assist residents with immediate needs.
