DETROIT >> The Red Wings weren’t done in the free-agent market.

The Wings added to their growing list of depth forwards Wednesday, signing Mason Appleton to a two-year contract with a $2.9 million annual average value.

Appleton, 29, a former Michigan State standout, is a seven-year NHL pro who has spent his entire career — except for one half season in Seattle — with the Winnipeg Jets.

Appleton played 71 games last season in Winnipeg with 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points. In his best season, Appleton scored a career-high 14 goals the year before, and has been a staple on Winnipeg’s middle-six forwards in a defensive role.

Appleton has played 400 regular-season NHL games for his career, collecting 57 goals and 81 assists for 138 points.

At 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds, Appleton has the size and defensive instincts — along with ability to contribute some offense — to slot comfortably into a third-line role.Soderblom signs

The Wings also signed forward Elmer Soderblom, a restricted free agent, to a two-year contract, the team announced.

The deal is worth an average annual value of $1.25 million.

Soderblom, 23, appeared in 26 games for the Wings last season, registering four goals among 11 points. The 6-foot-8, 246-pounder from Sweden had a plus-2 rating.

The Red Wings selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

By signing Soderblom, general manager Steve Yzerman finished signing all three of the Wings’ restricted free agents.

Earlier in the week, the Wings signed defenseman Albert Johansson to a two-year extension with an AAV of $1.125 million, and forward Jonatan Berggren to a one-year contract worth $1.825 million.

Development camp ends

The Wings’ development camp for recent draft picks was set to conclude Thursday with a four-on-four game.

Players have had skill instruction and development, as well as meetings on nutrition, weight training and a variety of other topics as they enter the world of pro hockey.

For Grayden Robertson-Palmer, a seventh-round draft pick last week, this has been a useful and educational event.

“I came in with the expectation to learn from the coaches and management staff, but also to learn from these amazing players that are here with me,” said Robertson-Palmer, a center who has gotten skating tips from Daniel Cleary. “I’ve gotten that opportunity. It’s been a lot of fun.

“I like it.”

Robertson-Palmer is joined at this camp by goaltender Rudy Guimond (2023 sixth round). The two Wings draft picks will be teammates in junior hockey in Moncton next season.

“I met him here for the first time and he seems a great guy,” Robertson-Palmer said. “I’m kind of excited to have that older mentor there who is familiar with Detroit. He’ll be a 20-year-old, overage (player). He’s a goalie but he can help me with advice, how to train or how to become a pro.”

Robertson-Palmer is excited to play under Moncton coach Gardiner MacDougall, who led Moncton to a QMJHL championship and was named junior coach of the year in the Canadian Hockey League.

“He’s an interesting guy,” said Guimond, who was 16-0-0 in the regular season with a .940 save percentage. “The big thing is he tailors his way of doing things toward the person that you are, so he gets the best out of all his guys. That’s really impressive.”
