Readers respond to Question of the Week: Will Newsom serve four years as governor?
Newsom will not keep his pledge to stay in office
Actions speak louder than words. Newsom is a politician first and foremost. Only a fool would believe that he will not find justification to reverse his pledge when he decides he wants to run for the presidency in 2024.
— Bob Horvath, Long Beach
Unfortunately, yes
Unfortunately for California, yes, Newson will serve four more years as governor. Fortunately, for the rest of the country, his attempt to run for president will fail based on current polling and betting sites that have historically done a good job predicting winners. Newsom is even behind Kamala Harris in the current betting odds. Harris got less than 1% of the Democratic vote in their 2020 primaries and Newsom is behind her?
— Stephen Waddell, Palos Verdes Estates
I don’t believe so
I don’t think Newsom will serve the full four years. He spends nothing on his reelection but spends it all elsewhere.
— Richard Metzger, Porter Ranch
I doubt he will finish term
I see no reason to believe that Governor Newsom would finish his term. In 2019 he promised to cancel the high-speed rail as too expensive and taking too long. He hasn’t. Dahle should be elected simply because he’ll stay in the state and govern instead of traveling around the county posturing for a presidential run and ignoring the problems here.
— Jim Winterroth, Torrance
Gov will be gone for sure
Gavin hasn’t helped the citizens of California in the days he’s served already. He’s an opportunist and the first chance he gets to better himself and family he’s gone. No way he stays four years if there’s 1% chance he can be the Democratic nominee. And I hope he is. Don’t let the door hit him in the rear going east.
— Jon Reitz, San Pedro
Not if duty calls
Not if he gets a better offer. Let’s see if the Dems anoint him as their boy. Duty calls. How could he not run for 1600?
