Seemingly ageless Bobby Wagner, who prepped at Ontario Colony High, has been voted as one of the top five off-ball linebackers in the NFL.

Wagner, who turned 35 late last month, has been a mainstay in the middle of the defense since joining the Washington Commanders in 2024 following years with the Seattle Seahawks and a one-season stop with the Rams.

Fred Warner of the San Francisco 49ers was selected as the top off-ball linebacker in a vote by The Associated Press.

Whether it’s stopping the run game, dropping into pass coverage, or even rushing the quarterback, Warner’s strong all-around play for San Francisco helped him win the honor of being the top vote-getter by the AP.

A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at off-ball linebacker, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second- through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.

Warner got seven of the eight first-place votes to go with one second to win the voting easily.

Three other players were selected on all eight ballots, with Baltimore’s Roquan Smith getting the other first-place vote to come in second, Philadelphia’s Zack Baun placed third, with Wagner in fourth. Indianapolis’ Zaire Franklin rounded out the top five.

New Orleans’ Demario Davis, Denver’s Dre Greenlaw, Minnesota’s Blake Cashman and Pittsburgh’s Patrick Queen also received votes.

Coach Dan Quinn, in his first season as coach of the Commanders, brought Wagner, his former linebacker from Seattle, to Washington for veteran leadership. And the 10-time Pro Bowl selection showed he can still perform at a high level.

Wagner had his 13th straight season with at least 100 tackles and earned his fifth second-team All-Pro selection to go along with six first-team picks. Only Reggie White (13) and Jim Otto (12) have been picked as a first or second-team All-Pro more than Wagner.

LOCAL QBS RECOGNIZED

Two Inland products received votes as the league’s top quarterback from the AP writers.

Wagner’s teammate Jayden Daniels, and Houston’s C.J. Stroud were among the vote-getters in the category won by three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City.

Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to consecutive Super Bowl titles in the 2022-23 seasons, finished with five first-place votes. Reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen from Buffalo got two, finishing second. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow received the other first-place vote and came in third.

Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson of Baltimore finished fourth and Jalen Hurts, who outplayed Mahomes in Philadelphia’s dominant Super Bowl victory over the Chiefs, was fifth.

Daniels, from Cajon High, was named Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting the rookie quarterback record for rushing yards in a season and leading the Commanders to their most wins in a season and first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991. Stroud, now a two-year NFL veteran from Rancho Cucamonga High, won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after stellar 2023 season.
