WATSONVILLE >> Harbor High’s unseeded boys basketball team knocked off No. 12 Monte Vista Christian 41-36 in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs on Friday night.

The Pirates (12-13), the fifth-place finisher in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, will play at No. 5 Palma (11-13) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Chieftains, the fourth place finisher in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Gabilan Division, had a bye in the first round. They are a seven-time section champion.

“The kids played hard from the tip to the end,” Pirates coach Craig Wooden said. “Energy was great. Everyone pitched in.”

Harbor jumped out to a 13-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 21-11 at the half. MVC entered the fourth trailing 31-19.

Guerande Houssin led the Pirates with nine points, and Nash Campbell scored eight.

MVC’s Bryce Brogan scored a game-high 22 points. He made three 3-pointers and was 11 of 18 from the free-throw line.Scotts Valley 51, Oceana 43

SCOTTS VALLEY — The No. 11 Falcons, the third-place finisher in the SCCAL, beat the unseeded Sharks in the first round of the D-IV playoffs.

Scotts Valley (13-11) plays at No. 6 Stevenson (17-7) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Pirates, the third-place finisher in the PCAL’s Mission Division, had a bye in the first round.

Girls

Soquel 59, Seaside 47

SOQUEL — The No. 10 Knights, who tied for third in the SCCAL, won their D-III first round game against the unseeded Spartans.

Soquel (10-15) plays at No. 7 Greenfield (16-7) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Bruins are the PCAL Cypress Division champions.

Soquel outscored the Spartans 19-5 in the second quarter to carry a 35-17 lead into the half. The Spartans outscored the Knights in both the third and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

Lily Thayer scored 13 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter. Amelie Stotland scored 10 points, and Gianna Winterhalder made three 3-pointers for nine points.

Braniah Charles scored 17 points for the Spartans (13-4), the runner-up in the Cypress Division.

Scotts Valley 51, Gonzales 42

GONZALES — The unseeded Falcons, who tied for third in the SCCAL, knocked off the No. 12 Spartans in the first round of the D-IV playoffs.

The Falcons (8-16) play at No. 5 Harker (7-15) in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Eagles went 0-10 in the West Bay Athletic League’s Foothill Division, which was won by Pinewood.

Freshman Brooklyn Williams drained six 3-pointers and scored 18 points for the Falcons.

Senior Amy Weiss had a double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Elana McGrew added eight points and 15 rebounds

SLV 85, KIPP San Jose 9

FELTON — The No. 10 Cougars outscored the unseeded Wolfpack 27-0 in the first quarter and rolled in the first round of the D-IV playoffs.

SLV (17-7) plays at No. 7 Carmel (8-14) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Padres enjoyed a first-round by after finishing in last place in the PCAL’s Gabilan Division.

Senior Bella Reynolds scored 20 of her game-high 30 points in the second quarter, which helped the Cougars enter the half with a 55-5 lead.

Senior Lucy Lilienthal-Wynn made a 3-pointer in each quarter and finished with 24 points.

Presentation 64, Harbor 19

SAN JOSE — The unseeded and short-handed Pirates were unable to keep pace with the No. 9 Panthers in the first round of the D-III playoffs.

“Our girls showed fight and played hard all 32 minutes,” Pirates coach James Gaynor Jr. said. “It’s our first playoff appearance in 15 years and we’re very proud of the girls for pulling together and hope this CCS experience becomes an expectation for our girls basketball program going forward.”

Harbor (8-16), winless in the SCCAL this season, made the postseason thanks to its above .500 record in nonleague play. The Pirates only had six of their 12 players available due to injury and sickness.

Senior guard Maya Manildi led Harbor with 13 points, and sophomore Amparo Ramirez led the defense with seven rebounds and five steals.
