Woman accused of attempting to stab police officer sentenced

A Longmont woman accused of attempting to stab a police officer after shoplifting in 2023 has been sentenced to prison.

Robin Niver, 54, was found guilty by a jury in March of one count of carrying a concealed weapon; however, the jury was unable to return unanimous verdicts on other counts. Then, in May, she accepted a plea deal in which she pleaded guilty to second-degree assault of a peace officer.

She was handed a 5-year prison sentence last month on the assault charge with 505 days of credit for time served.

At 12:03 p.m. Dec. 19, 2023, Longmont police were dispatched to Walmart on 2514 Main St. to investigate an alleged theft. Dispatch advised that a woman had pushed a shopping cart filled with stolen merchandise out the door of Walmart.

Police found and chased her as she ran away with a large butcher knife in hand. Niver then reportedly struck the officer with the knife on the lower right abdomen portion of his vest.

The officer pinned her hand and the knife to the ground until another officer arrived and assisted in disarming Niver. At some point during the officer’s attempt to get the knife away from Niver, he was cut.
