Major League Baseball hall of famer Dave Winfield and his wife, Toya Turner, look up at his statue after it was unveiled at Toni Stone Field in St. Paul on Saturday. Winfield was born and raised in St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood and graduated from Central High School. A star pitcher and basketball player at the University of Minnesota, Winfield became one of baseball’s great right fielders over a 22-year career playing for the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Twins and Cleveland. He was an all-star 12 times and won seven Gold Glove Awards. He is also a member of the Gophers and Central halls of fame. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. Last summer, then-Mayor Melvin Carter announced the statue as a way to remind young athletes of their own potential for greatness. Story in Sports, C1. John Autey — Pioneer Press
