SOQUEL >> A storage building was destroyed in a fire that erupted deep in the hills of Soquel Tuesday, but first responders managed to pounce on it quick enough to prevent any major spread to surrounding areas.

According to Cal Fire, local crews were called around 3:22 p.m. Tuesday to Sage Lane where an outbuilding had become engulfed in flames and had spread to adjoining grass and brush vegetation.

The response, which was led by the Central Fire District and included units from the Scotts Valley Fire District and Cal Fire CZU, quickly put a call in for an air attack, but the water drop was ultimately called off after crew leaders realized it was not needed.

Forward progress on the fire was stopped at approximately 3:49 p.m. and the burn was limited to about one-eighth of an acre, according to a Cal Fire spokesperson.

The structure was a total loss, the spokesperson added, but there were no injuries reported and no one will be displaced because of the blaze. The cause of the fire was unknown and still under investigation Wednesday.
