


Santa Cruz High freshman wrestler Vera Bentley took first place in her weight division at the Central Coast Section Southern Regional Championships at Watsonville High on Saturday.
She earned a 14-3 major decision over No. 3 Angelina Juarez, a sophomore at Alisal, in the final for 130-pounders.
Bentley, who finished 4-0, reached the final by recording a 13-4 major decision and a pair of pins, including one against No. 1 seed Jazmine Perez of North Monterey County in the semifinals.
“She is a very physical wrestler,” said Cardinals coach Peter Gustafson, noting that Bentley also trains with Jay Reyes at Live Oak Wrestling Club. “She’s got a very high ceiling and tons of drive.”
San Lorenzo Valley senior Gabriella Brasuell (155 pounds) took second place as the No. 5 seed. She was pinned by No. 2 Helena Rodriguez, a sophomore at Lincoln in San Jose, in the final in 1:46.
Brasuell reached the final by recording three straight pins, including an upset of No. 1 Janelle Loera Morgan, a junior at Monterey, in the semifinals.
The top 10 wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes advanced to the CCS Masters Championships at Independence High in San Jose on Saturday.
Santa Cruz sophomore Marlena Gustafson (125) took third, and Watsonville senior Martha Zurita (130) took fourth.
Harbor junior Kira Demma (135) and Santa Cruz sophomore Onyx Escobar (140) took fifth, and Scotts Valley junior Citlali Lopez (115) and Monte Vista Christian sophomore Megan Merson (130) took sixth.
SLV junior Jennifer Black (115) and Soquel junior Anika Radich (135) took seventh, and Aptos senior Amelie Mintun (190) took eighth.
Harbor senior Addie Jones (110), junior teammate Julia Carranza (145), Soquel sophomore Alize Robles (130), and Santa Cruz senior Heaven Cardenas (170) took ninth.
Soquel freshman Callia Sillas (125) took 10th.
Boys wrestling
CCS Regionals >> Aptos sophomore Cruz Contreras was the lone male from Santa Cruz County to reach a final at the Central Coast Section Southern Regional Wrestling Championships at Watsonville High on Saturday.
Contreras dropped a 17-2 major decision to No. 1 seed Isaiah Cortez, a senior at Gilroy who has won three straight CCS titles, in the final for 126-pounders to finish second.
Contreras, seeded No. 5, reached the final with a 10-3 decision, 11-3 major decision, and pin.
The top eight wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes advanced to the CCS Masters Championships at Independence High in San Jose on Saturday.
Aptos sophomore Dominic Cabot (106), SLV senior Grady Cloyd (190), and junior teammate Ollin Bates (215) took third.
Santa Cruz senior Balam Letona (120) and Aptos sophomore Cole Moules (150) took fourth

Scotts Valley junior Angelo Vignato (132), Harbor sophomore Charlie Shirmer (150), senior teammate Nico Aquino (165), and Pajaro Valley junior Eriberto Estrada (215) took seventh.
Harbor senior August Bentley (138) took eighth.
Aptos junior Alfred Cabot (113) took ninth, and Soquel junior Levi Larsen (126) and Santa Cruz junior Julian Ysselstein (132) took 10th.
Men’s swimming
PCSC Championships >> UC Santa Cruz’s Andrew Koika took third in the 100-yard freestyle race (44.91), and the Banana Slugs won the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships title with scoring 1,605.5 points at East Los Angeles College on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs’ Kyle Reitan was fourth in the 100 free (45.22), and teammate Massimo Reyna was seventh (45.66).
UCSC’s Michael Fusinati took fifth in the 1,650 free (16:14.10).
Women’s swimming
PCSC Championships >> UCSC’s Maddy Gruender took fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:05.48) on the final day of the PCSC Championships at East Los Angeles College on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs’ Honour Dufresne took sixth in the 1,650 free (17:44.46), and teammate Piper Stickler took seventh (17:48.12).
UCSC finished third in the team standings with 1,035.5 points.
Girls soccer
Pacific Collegiate 4, at MVC 2 >> Anna Walker-Edwards scored three goals to help the Pumas win their regular-season finale on Saturday and finished tied for second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission Division.
Kaia Gurdak scored the Pumas’ final goal on a penalty kick.
Elia Mas, Kate Lane, Amelie Pan were credited with assists.
Goalie Kat Buckley made four saves for the Pumas (8-6-3, 6-3-3).
MVC scored both of its goals in the first half. Junior midfielder Ashley Drago scored on a pass from sophomore Tea Knowles in the 24th minute, and junior midfielder Kanaya Falcé converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute.
Both penalty kicks were awarded for hand balls inside the penalty box.
Freshman goalie Charlotte Groves made eight saves for the Mustangs (5-11-3, 3-8-1).
Women’s basketball
California Tribal College 67, at UCSC 61 >> The Banana Slugs lost their regular-season finale at the West Field House on Saturday.
UCSC (7-17) competes in the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament beginning Feb. 27.
