The NBA postponed the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday with several massive wildfires burning across the greater Los Angeles area.

It is the second straight day a game slated to be played in downtown Los Angeles has been postponed. The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings were scheduled to host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.

The date for the rescheduled games will be announced at a later time.

Three major fires were burning in areas of the vast Los Angeles metroplex following two days of extraordinary winds. A major threat broke out Wednesday evening in the Hollywood Hills, close to the heart of the entertainment industry, but had been contained by Thursday morning.

Baseball

Rockies finalize 1-year deal with infielder Estrada >> Thairo Estrada and the Colorado Rockies finalized a one-year contract, a deal that includes a mutual option for 2026.

Primarily a second baseman during the last three seasons, the 28-year-old hit .217 with nine homers and 47 RBIs last year with the San Francisco Giants.

He was assigned outright to Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 30 and on Oct. 1 elected to become a free agent, his right as a player with at least three years of major league service.

Guerrero agrees to $28.5M and Valdez to $18M >> Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays avoided a salary arbitration hearing when the first baseman agreed to a $28.5 million, one-year contract on the day players and teams exchanged proposed figures.

Houston left-hander Framber Valdez also was among 138 players reaching deals, getting an $18 million, one-year contract.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker asked for the highest amount among 17 players who swapped figures at $17.5 million. He was offered $15 million.

Washington first baseman Nathaniel Lowe asked for $11.1 million and was offered $10.3 million, and San Diego right-hander Michael King requested $8.8 million and was offered $7,325,000.

Among those who agreed to deals were San Diego infielder Luis Arraez ($14 million) and right-hander Dylan Cease ($13.75 million), Arizona right-hander Zac Gallen ($13.5 million) and first baseman Josh Naylor ($10.9 million), Seattle outfielder Randy Arozarena ($11.3 million), Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal ($10.15 million) and New York Yankees closer Devin Williams ($8.6 million). Arraez lost his hearing last year and earned $10.6 million.

Guerrero and Valdez can become free agents after the World Series. Guerrero, a son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, won a $19.9 million salary last year in a record high for an arbitration decision when a panel picked his figure rather than the Blue Jays’ $18.05 million offer.

Juan Soto set a record for an arbitration-eligible player when he agreed last year to a $31 million deal with the New York Yankees, topping Shohei Ohtani’s $30 million 2023 contract with the Los Angeles Angels.

Soccer

Man United’s Diallo signs extension >> Manchester United forward Amad Diallo has signed a contract extension with the Premier League club until 2030.

Diallo, who scored a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with league leader Liverpool on Sunday, has been rewarded for his impressive form this season. He also struck a 90th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in December.

The 22-year-old Diallo joined United from Atalanta in 2021 and has had loan spells at Rangers and Sunderland.

Brazilian star Marta re-signs with Orlando >> Brazilian star Marta is staying with the Orlando Pride.

The six-time FIFA world player of the year has re-signed with the defending National Women’s Soccer League champions through 2026.

Marta, 38, has played for the Pride since 2017. She defied her age in captaining the Pride to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit in the league championship game last year. Along the way, Orlando won the NWSL Shield, the team’s first-ever trophy.

Skiing

Vonn 10th fastest in practice for World Cup downhill >> Ski great Lindsey Vonn was 10th fastest in a training run for her first World Cup downhill in six years.

Three weeks after her World Cup comeback with a titanium knee at age 40 in a super-G, Vonn completed the two-kilometer Karl Schranz course 2.55 seconds behind Federica Brignone of Italy.

The United States star was clocked at close to 68 mph at a fast section of the hill where she won a downhill in December 2007.

A second practice is planned on Friday before the race on Saturday.

Vonn has won 43 World Cup downhills — a record for men and women — among her 82 career wins that is third on the all-time list.

Golf

Peterson makes PGA Tour debut at age 36 >> The Sony Open is the PGA Tour stop where introductions are in order, and Paul Peterson made quite the first impression. He opened with a 6-under 64 and shared the lead with five others on a pleasant day at Waialae.

Harry Hall, Denny McCarthy and Eric Cole, all of whom got an early start in Hawaii last week at Kapalua, also opened at 64 along with Adam Schenk.

Peterson, 36, has five passport books with stamps from some 44 countries. He has held cards from six tours around the world, which doesn’t include the mini-tours in Arizona and the Dakotas when he was just starting out.
