BROOMFIELD >> Senior Jack Wadlington wasn’t part of the 3-point contest following Friday’s tournament games at Broomfield High School.

But it felt like he won it anyway.

Just before, the 5-foot-8 point guard beat the buzzer to lift the Eagles past Wyoming’s Campbell County, 71-70, on the second day of the Broomfield Legends Hall of Fame Tournament.

The hosts were in peril of a second heartbreaking loss in 24 hours when Jack Andela hit from deep to put CC ahead with three seconds remaining. But after missing at the horn in a 47-46 loss to Shawnee Mission South (Kan.) on the tournament’s opening night, Broomfield wouldn’t again.

Wadlington said he told coach Terrence Dunn he wanted the shot in the timeout huddle. He then connected a few feet back of the perimeter.

“I told coach I’m his dude,” said Wadlington, who pumped his arms and hollered before getting dog-piled by his teammates in the ensuing celebration. Grinning, he added, “I didn’t want to bank, but the bank fell.”

Wadlington missed all of last season with an injury and had struggled to find his offensive game early this winter, averaging just 3.8 points per game on 26% shooting coming into the tournament.

But with his three 3s and team-best 13 points, he helped the Eagles withstand 55 combined points from the Camels’ Truman DeGrange (31) and Andela (24).

He was in focus in what was a wild finish.

In the second half, Broomfield (4-3) trailed by as many as seven and was down 52-45 in the final minute of the third before it rallied.

Late in the fourth, Blaes Kane scored five straight, and Will Lapham hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds to go to give the Eagles a 68-61 lead. But the Camels stormed back as DeGrange hit his eighth and ninth 3s of the night before Andela hit another in the waning seconds.

Then, it was Wadlington’s turn.

“You can’t make that stuff up. That dude works the hardest on the team,” Kane said of him. “He’s the first in the gym and first for everything. And he’d hit a bit of a cold streak but he’s been fired up all week.” He took a moment. “That right there was a testament of his work.”

A highlight among others on this night.

At halftime, the school introduced its 2024 Hall of Fame class. And after, the Eagles put on a dunk and 3-point contest.
