The Woodland High School varsity baseball team capped off a sweep of Golden Empire League foes El Camino Friday evening with a 17-4, five-inning mercy-rule win.

With the win, the Wolves (13-6, 10-5 GEL) moved up into a tie for second place in the GEL with Rio Linda, behind first-placed Sutter, who leads the league with a 12-0 record. Destiny Charter at 9-6 and Casa Roble at 8-6 are right behind the Wolves in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Woodland raced out to a 7-1 lead after the first inning that they would never look back from. They’d go on to pour in 4 in the top of the second, 5 in the top of the third and 1 more in the top of the fourth for good measure. El Camino would manage to claw 3 of those runs back, scoring 1 in the bottom of the fourth and 2 in the bottom of the fifth before the mercy rule was enacted.

At the plate, juniors Aiden Lopez, David Tanner, and freshman Cohen Dwyer led the way for the Wolves with 3 RBI each. Senior Joseph Cadotte had a game-high 3 runs scored and 2 hits. Junior Trevor Zane had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

On the mound, Lopez pitched 4 innings, striking out 5 and allowing 2 earned runs. Dwyer came in for the final inning, striking out 1.

Up next for the Wolves will be a break from league play as they prepare for any potential postseason berth via a tournament. They are set to face both Center and Grant on Monday before finding out who they’d play later in the week.

They resume GEL play Monday, April 21, against Destiny Christian Academy at home at Clark Field.
