The Marin Catholic High girls basketball team is streaking its way into the North Coast Section Division III semifinals following a 50-34 victory over Archie Williams on Friday night.

The Wildcats have strung together 45 consecutive victories against MCAL teams over two-plus seasons.

Winners of their last eight games, the top-seeded Wildcats are now 11-0 at home this season with a chance to improve upon both streaks on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Marin Catholic hosts No. 4 Eureka, which defeated St. Patrick-St.Vincent, 69-58.

“It’s a huge advantage playing at home,” said Marin Catholic coach Ashley Saia. “It’s obviously our comfort zone. We’re not having to get on a bus and drive. It’s nice for our fans to be local.”

Facing No. 9 Archie Williams (16-13) for the third time this season, the Wildcats (24-5) had one goal in mind in their NCS quarterfinal: Slow down Carly Amborn. The Peregrine Falcons’ all-league 6-foot-1 sophomore was coming off a career-best 35 points in Archie’s first-round road victory at American Canyon on Tuesday. With guard-like moves and a sweet shooting touch, Amborn knocked down six three-pointers to set up the rematch with two-time defending MCAL champ Marin Catholic.

Against the Wildcats, Amborn still managed a game-high 13 points but had to work hard just to get the ball due to man-to-man defense supplied by MCAL Player of the Year Gracyn Lovette and Madie Dayton.

“Gracyn and Madie really dialed in, said Saia. “They’re two of our best defenders. As great as Gracyn is on offense, she really loves a defensive challenge and Carly is definitely that. She’ll do anything to make sure we get a W. It was a huge part of our game plan that we executed well.”

Dayton led the Wildcats with 10 points. Cecily Hadd and Lovette added eight and seven. Annabelle Freed and Allegra Gabrielli-di Carpegna scored six points apiece for the Peregrine Falcons.

Dayton got the Wildcats off to a hot start offensively with eight first-quarter points. Her layup midway in the period gave Marin Catholic an 8-7 lead and the Wildcats never trailed the rest of the way.

The Peregrine Falcons got as close as six points early in the second quarter but quickly found themselves trailing 25-14 on baskets by Sienna Frazier and Lovette. Amborn cut Archie’s deficit to 29-20 to start the second half but the Peregrine Falcons trailed by double digits over the final 11 minutes of the game.

“They have the best defense in the county for sure,” Archie Williams coach Zach Wahle said of Marin Catholic. “They’re sharp. They’re talented.”

Wahle applauded the Wildcats’ defensive efforts against Amborn, especially considering the type of game she had on Tuesday night during the Peregrine Falcons’ 57-49 first-round upset victory at No. 8 American Canyon.

The NCS win serves as a building block for the future at Archie, which only graduates three players. Unfortunately, that includes senior point guard Jessica Gauna, a second-team all-league selection.

“It’s going to hurt a lot to lose Jessica Gauna,” said Wahle. “I’ve coached her since second grade. It’s a hard one.”
