Santa Cruz’s Brody Price took first place in the U16 boys division on the final day of USA Surfing’s West Coast Prime Series at Steamer Lane, his hometown break, on Sunday.
Price, 15, a freshman who is homeschooled, won all four of his heats. In the final, he produced a two-wave score of 15.47.
“I’m so stoked,” Price said. “I’m super happy. This one is extra special because it’s a big contest, it was in front of a home crowd, and I performed well.”
Price was chaired up the stairs from the shore by two friends after his victory.
Price said he focused on quality over quantity in the final.
“My focus was on getting two good scores and that’s what I got,” he said.
San Clemente’s Finn McCarty (14.00) took second, Encinitas’ Brody Buck (9.50) took third, and San Clemente’s Westley Young (6.63) was fourth.
Price said the swell was solid all day, that he was appreciative of it, and the fact he got to surf it with barely anyone else in the ocean.
He said it had been a while since he’d produced a showing he was pleased with. He was tied for fifth at the Prime Series in Oceanside on Feb. 1-2, when fog forced the cancellation of the event.
“It feels good to get a good result,” he said.
Price won his first-round heat with a 13.33 total. He posted a quarterfinal win with a 17.00 total, and posted a 14.84 total in the semifinals.
The Steamer Lane event was No. 4 of 5 in the season series. The final event is slated to take place at Huntington Beach Pier on April 12-13.
Five other division winners were crowned. San Clemente’s King Nicol (14.23) won the boys U14 title and Torrance’s Teagan Meza (14.83) won the girls U14 crown.
Carlsbad’s Reid Van Wagoner (16.00) took first in the girls U16 final.
The South Bay’s Jonny Herrouin took first in the U18 final (16.47), and San Clemente’s Mia McLeish (9.27) took first in the girls U18 final.
