A 31-year-old man who traveled to south suburban University Park late Thursday for the sale of an item arranged online was fatally shot during an apparent robbery, police said.

About 10:50 p.m., Kevin C. Jarrett, of Kankakee, along with another person, traveled to the 800 block of White Oak Lane after coordinating the sale of an item on the website letgo.com, which is also a mobile app, said John Pate, chief of University Park police.

When he met with three other men, the meeting turned into a robbery.

At some point, Jarrett was fatally shot during the incident, Pate said in an email.

Jarrett was then driven off in a car that came to rest near Burnham Drive and White Oak Lane, police said.

Police did not release additional details about the shooting. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 708-235-4803.

A spokesperson for letgo.com issued the following statement Friday morning: “This is an unimaginable tragedy. Our team is working with local law enforcement to assist with their investigation.”
