With the help of rookie kicker Jake Bates, the Detroit Lions have made history.

Bates was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November on Thursday. His recognition comes after pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson won NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September and quarterback Jared Goff won NFC Offensive Player of the Month for October.

It’s the first time in franchise history the Lions have had a player win the award in all three phases in the same season, per Lions PR. Bates is the first Detroit kicker to receive the honor since Matt Prater did it in September 2017. Jason Hanson is the only other Lions kicker to be named player of the month.

Bates played five games in November, knocking through all 17 of his extra points and going 8-for-9 on his field goal attempts. His biggest couple of makes came against the Houston Texans in Week 10, when he nailed a 58-yarder to tie the game with about five minutes remaining and then connected on a 52-yarder for the win as time expired.

Goff nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award

The Lions announced Thursday that Goff is the team’s nominee for this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, designed to recognize “players who excel on-the-field and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to creating a positive impact beyond the game.”

It’s the second time Goff, who often donates his time and money to philanthropic causes, has been nominated to win what the NFL calls its most prestigious award.

“Once again, I am humbled to receive this nomination,” Goff said in a release. “My work off the field is deeply connected to my desire and responsibility to give back to my communities. To be a source of inspiration with the influence that I have is something I take seriously. Myself, my platform, and our partners remain committed to exemplifying the great values this recognition and award represents.”

Goff has a particular passion for education, according the Lions. The quarterback is partners with Detroit’s Give Merit FATE program, the Detroit Lions Foundation and Detroit Lions Academy, entities that all work to provide scholarships or educational opportunties for students. Goff is also partnered with the Lineage Foundation for Good, a group that fights food insecurity.

The winner of the award, which will be announced during NFL Honors on Feb. 6, will receive a donation up to $265,000 that they can send to a charity of their choosing.

Goff, along with all other nominees across the league, will began wearing a special decal on his helmet in Week 14.
