CORONA — Matt Logan called it a “dream job” when he was tabbed to lead the Centennial football program back in 1997.

And now in his 28th season at the helm, Logan is still living that dream.

Logan earned his 293rd career win with Friday’s 60-21 Big West Conference-North Division victory over Norco, making him the winningest high school football coach in Inland Empire history. Logan entered the night tied with legendary Fontana and Kaiser coach Dick Bruich.

After the game, Logan was presented with a Centennial helmet signed by the numerous coaches who have assisted him throughout the years. On the back of the helmet were two remembrance stickers: “WL” for Logan’s father, Wade, who passed away a few years ago after battling Parkinson’s disease. And a pink ribbon for Logan’s first wife, Donna, who passed away in 2007 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Logan did not immediately see the stickers. When the PA announcer mentioned them, Logan turned the helmet around and fought back tears.

Among the family members present to celebrate Logan’s record-breaking win Friday evening were his mother, Marilyn; his eldest daughter Lindsey; his wife of eight years, LaRonda, who was his high school sweetheart at Norco High School; and granddaughters Capri and Kai.

“None of this would have been possible without the support, contributions and sacrifices from my family,” Logan said earlier this week.

There are more than two dozen assistants on Centennial’s coaching staff, many of whom have been with Logan for more than a dozen years. Longtime defensive coordinator Dan Herring was brought onto the staff by Logan back in 1995, when the later was an assistant himself.

“Having a stable staff has been one of the most important factors to the success we have had,” Logan said after Friday night’s victory. “Even if someone’s leaves for a new stage in life, they’ve been mentors to the younger coaches. So, stability remains year after year.”

Centennial also clinched at least a share of the league championship Friday night, the program’s 22nd since Logan was handed the reins.

The Huskies (7-2 overall, 4-0 in league) faced fourth-and-2 on their 34 on the first possession of the game. But in true Logan fashion, he kept the offense on the field. Wide receiver Cory Butler Jr. lined up in the backfield and raced away 66 yards for a touchdown.

Norco (3-6, 1-3) was equally impressive on its opening drive, Joseph Stoffel completed all three of passes for 62 yards and then capped the eight-play, 81-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring run. Stoffel outraced defenders to the sideline and stretched the ball over the pylon.

Centennial had a short field to work with on the next possession following a long kickoff return by Butler. Quarterback Husan Longstreet completed three straight passes, including a 25-yarder for a touchdown to Tyler George to give the Huskies a 13-7 lead midway through the first quarter.

Norco was 2 yards away from another matching score, but a bad snap on second down moved the ball back to the 18. The Cougars tried to salvage the drive near the end of the quarter, but a 35-yard field goal attempt by Mauricio Aguilar was blocked by Cade Paterson.

Longstreet threw touchdown passes to Noah Westbrook (9 yards) and Dylan Wallner (10) in the second quarter to extend the lead to 27-7.

Norco’s Trevor Schneider scored on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 27-14 with 4:41 in the half. But Centennial scored three more times before the teams went to the locker room. Malachi Roby had a 5-yard touchdown run, Longstreet connected with Butler on a 59-touchdown play, and Elijah Riley returned a fumble 66 yards for a touchdown to extend the Huskies’ advantage to 46-14.

Dominick Catalano took over for Longstreet in the second half, and scored on a 2-yard keeper to help push the lead to 53-14 with 10:05 remaining in the third quarter. Centennial scored touchdowns on each of its first seven possessions of the game.

“The offense looked much sharper this week, outside of the penalties,” Logan said. “The goal is to score every time we have the ball.”

Longstreet completed 9 of 13 passes for 151 yards and added 68 yards rushing. Keshaun White led the ground attack with 74 yards and scored Centennial’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter. Butler finished with 151 yards on his four offensive touches.

Norco gained nearly 400 yards during Friday night’s game, but the Cougars were plagued by three turnovers. Stoffel was a standout for the Cougars, completing 15 of 23 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Schneider and Chris Laing combined to rush for 153 yards.

“We are young team overall that is still growing,” Norco coach Dab Barlage said. “We are just trying to work on our effort and how we are playing. The Norco brand is a bunch of tough guys that show up and play tough-nosed football. And we’re trying to get that done.”
