Yolo County Supervisor Angel Barajas put out an emergency update for his constituents following an explosion on Tuesday evening which destroyed a fireworks storage facility in Esparto.
Barajas, whose district includes Esparto, recapped the Tuesday incident that left two people injured and seven unaccounted for as of the time of writing. The initial blast occurred around 5:50 p.m., followed by multiple secondary explosions that spread spot fires across approximately 78 to 80 acres. These explosions were visible and felt miles away, some reports as far as Vacaville.
Barajas broke down how the county is responding to the unexpected blasts, which includes:
Evacuations & Power Outages: A one-mile evacuation zone was established. Residents in Esparto and nearby Madison were temporarily displaced. Over 2,000 PG&E customers lost electricity; most power was restored by early Wednesday morning.
Casualties and Missing Persons: Two individuals suffered injuries and were treated on-site. Heartbreakingly, seven people remain unaccounted for, with families working closely alongside Cal Fire, Sheriff’s Office, and the facility owner to determine their status.
Investigation & Response: Cal Fire, the State Fire Marshal, and Yolo County agencies are investigating the cause, awaiting cooling before explosive experts can safely enter the site.
“County staff and local nonprofits are at the epicenter working to ensure no one is left alone in this crisis,” Barajas stated. “Our team is committed to ensuring impacted individuals and families receive the care and assistance they deserve.”
Barajas added the county is working to support families impacted by Tuesday’s events. Some resources include:
• Temporary housing and shelter
• Food, clothing & essentials
• Counseling services
• Mental Health Support
“During these extraordinarily challenging days for Esparto and Knights Landing, please know the entire Yolo County team stands with you,” Barajas states. “We are committed to being there, physically, emotionally, and logistically, so no one faces this alone. If you or anyone you know is in need of assistance, we are here to serve you.”
