What did you think about the dust-up involving President Donald Trump and Ukraininian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office last Friday?
That’s our Question of the Week for readers.
Was Zelenskyy “disrespectful” to the office of the president of the United States, as Vice President JD Vance said, or did he walk into a public trap set by the administration in order to embarrass him, as some observers claim?
During the meeting, which was supposed to be the precursor to a lunch, a press conference and a signing of a deal on American access to mining precious metals, Trump and Vance admonished Zelenskyy for not being grateful enough for past U.S. support after Ukraine was invaded by Russia, and Trump appeared to try to get the Ukrainian leader to agree to a peace deal on terms set by the Americans administration.
Eventually, Zelenskyy just walked out, got into an official car and left the White House grounds.
One reporter present said the fracas was “unlike any seen between an American president and foreign leader in modern times.” Whose fault was the contretemps?
One Trump voter told the BBC that “Zelenskyy did come across as arrogant, frankly. I get he was trying to make his point but he doesn’t know how to deal with Trump.” Trump backers say that Zelenskyy dodged meetings with U.S. officials for days prior to Friday and made the mistake of ruling out an immediate ceasefire, which angered Trump.
One Democratic voter told the British network she “saw Trump and Vance steamrolling President Zelenskyy and refusing to let him get a word in edgewise. They were selfish, rude, callous and displayed a complete lack of basic human empathy.” And a longtime local Republican told this newspaper that Trump’s literal finger-pointing at Zelenskyy showed he had never learned “the basics of common etiquette.” Should Trump have let his temper flare and threaten to abandon Ukraine altogether? Should Zelenskyy have been more thick-skinned and thankful for the many years of American support?
