October is Michigan Library Appreciation Month. Libraries across the state are embracing the theme “Let’s Go!” for the celebration spearheaded by the Michigan Library Association (MLA). The theme encourages residents to discover the full range of resources, services, and community connections that local libraries offer.

From educational programs to unique items available for loan through a “Library of Things,” public libraries provide residents with opportunities to connect, explore and learn.

The library card is the heart of Michigan Library Appreciation Month — a gateway to an incredible range of resources.

“All Michigan residents are encouraged to get a library card and go connect, go explore, and go learn at their local public library,” said Deborah Mikula, executive director of the MLA.

Libraries are more than just buildings full of books; they are community hubs that foster engagement, learning and exploration. In addition to books, many libraries offer:

• Information access — print, audio, DVDs, online resources, databases, and video games.Community centers — meeting spaces where people can connect to others and to information, events, and programs for all ages.

• Civic engagement — libraries often serve as polling places during elections

• Food and nutrition — many libraries have food collection that goes to local food pantries and host food-related classes on food prep for various ethnicities and seasonal and healthy cooking choices.

“Libraries are always on,” Mikula said. “They are more than places to borrow books; they are community centers where people can engage with technology, explore cultural and educational opportunities, and connect with their neighbors.”
