Stephen Walter Swinney, beloved husband, father, and mentor, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from respiratory failure due to complications from a stroke.

His loss leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Born in Pasadena, CA, to Mel and Gwen Swinney, Steve moved to San Marino, CA, at the age of 10. He received his BA in Journalism from University of Utah in 1968, before earning a Masters in Public Relations from USC in 1982. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Susan, while proudly serving as a a Specialist 5th Class in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971.

Throughout his remarkable life, Steve touched the lives of thousands. He found joy and purpose in his roles as a teacher, small business owner, swim coach and referee, yearbook advisor, scoutmaster, Pasadena Tournament of Roses member, and volunteer police officer. His dedication to serving others and shaping young minds made a lasting impact on his community.

Steve is survived by his wife Susan, his sons Chris and Jim, and his brothers Richard and Brian, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, integrity, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pasadena Humane Society in Steve’s memory.
