Ida Gwendoline Bergh (Olson), age ninety-six and living at Raincross at Riverside, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2022. Ida Gwen was born on December 11, 1925 on a farm in the Glenside – Broderick area of Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the daughter of Alvin and Florella (Ganes) Olson and second oldest of twelve children. She was preceded in death by her parents and by sisters Vivian Pushie (Howard), Joyce Olson (Roy), and Florence MacDonald (Ted), and brothers Malcolm (Ella Rolles) and Edwin (Kay Pushie). Also preceding her in death were two brothers-in-law, Howard Pushie and Ted MacDonald and sister-in-law, Ella Olson.
She is dearly remembered by: sister Sharon Archibald (Jim), and brothers, Jarle (Judy), Ronald (Delaine), Ken (Donna), Lloyd (Betty Lou), and Larry (Irene).
Gwen (name favored by Bob) was united in marriage on September 17, 1948 to Berthold Orphie Bergh (Bob) at Saron Lutheran Church in Hagen, Saskatchewan. Bob preceded Gwen in death by one year. They had been married seventythree years. Because of Bob’s schooling and work, they lived in several places: Saskatoon Saskatchewan; Columbus, Ohio; Berkeley, California; and ended up in Riverside, California where Bob worked as a Research Specialist in Genetics specializing in avocados. Gwen often helped Bob in his research and traveled with him all over the world to avocado growing countries.
Gwen is also lovingly remembered by her daughter, Linda Sanborn (Bergh) and her children, Heather and Robert (Brooklynn); and son Robert and his children, Justin and Katie. She has six great grandchildren.
Gwen’s salvation and hope of eternal life rested in her faith and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Riverside and was the only remaining founding member alive when she passed. She served in several ministries both in the church and out.
Gwen was a leader, go-getter and a doer taking charge when the situation called for it. She was gracious, kind, loving, generous, and welcoming and had a great concern and heart for the needy. She enjoyed visiting family and relatives in Canada and was very hospitable to friends and family visiting her home. Everyone loved Ida Gwen.
Taking after her mother, she was an excellent cook and especially Norwegian food and goodies: lefsa, kumla, lutefisk, flatbrod, julekaker, and steamed pudding were her specialties.
Memorial contributions in her memory can be directed to charities of your choice.
