The Detroit Lions announced Saturday evening that running back David Montgomery has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Detroit through 2027.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the two-year extension is worth up to $18.25 million with $10.5 million in new guaranteed money.

Montgomery, who was in the second season of a three-year deal worth up to $18 million, becomes the latest member of Detroit’s offense to ink an extension with the team. Quarterback Jared Goff, offensive tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown all re-upped with the Lions this summer.

Montgomery, 27, rushed for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns in in his first season with Detroit and is off to a similar pace in 2024.

He has 271 yards on 63 carries (4.3 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns in four games.

When the Lions parted ways with running back Jamaal Williams — one of the drivers of Detroit’s renewed culture under head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes — after the 2022 season, many wondered how they’d replace Williams’ intangibles.

With Montgomery, however, they’ve maintained that presence and more. Lions coaches and players have consistently praised his work ethic and what it means to the team.

“A lot of the things that we do in (the running backs) room — and even other people’s rooms — they do it because he does it,” Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery said. “He is the kind of guy that sets the tone for the day of practice, and the way that he finishes.

“You guys have seen out there, some of these runs that most people would stop running after 25.

“He’s going 50, 60, 70 yards.”

Montgomery’s most impressive moment this season came in a Week 1 overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams, 26-20. After the Lions won the coin toss to begin overtime, Montgomery helped Detroit down the field with five rushes for 45 yards to set up the winning score from a yard out.

“David Montgomery put that game on his shoulders, and he really willed that to happen,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said.

“It was impressive. He’s a stud.”

After the victory over Los Angeles, Lions quarterback Jared Goff called Montgomery “our tone-setter.”

“He’s a leader, he’s the guy when the game is on the line we want to find him,” Goff said.

Montgomery, who played his college ball at Iowa State, was a third-round selection by the Chicago Bears in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Over four years in Chicago, he averaged 902.3 yards per season and scored 26 total touchdowns.

With Detroit, Montgomery has scored 17 touchdowns in 18 games.
