


Mikko Rantanen scored his first two goals of the playoffs in the third period, leading the Avalanche to a 6-3 victory over the Jets on Tuesday night in Winnipeg, Manitoba, that clinched their NHL Western Conference first-round playoff series in five games.
Rantanen, who also had an assist, scored twice in a span of just under four minutes early in the third period to snap a 3-3 tie.
Valeri Nichushkin, Yakov Trenin, Artturi Lehkonen and Josh Manson also scored for the Avs, who will play the winner of the series between the Stars and defending Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights. That series was tied 2-2 going into Wednesday night’s game, which ended too late for this edition.

The Hurricanes next face the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Rangers. ... Matthew Knies scored in less than three minutes into OT and the Maple Leafs beat the host Bruins 2-1 on Tuesday to stave off elimination in the East series, which the Bruins lead 3-2. The Leafs played without Auston Matthews (illness). ... The Predators edged the host Canucks 2-1 victory on Tuesday to avoid elimination in the West series, which the Canucks lead 3-2.
Tennis: Top-seeded Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Madrid Open on Wednesday because of a hip injury. The 22-year-old Australian Open champ from Italy had defeated Karen Khachanov in the fourth round Tuesday. Sinner was expected to play in Rome before the French Open begins later this month. Also, two-time defending champ Carlos Alcaraz fell to Russia’s Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
