Reggae-rock band Rebelution is returning to a familiar stage this summer as it heads to the OC Fair in Costa Mesa to take over the adjacent Pacific Amphitheatre for shows tonight and Saturday.

The concerts are part of the venue’s Summer Concert Series, and for at least one band member, music isn’t going to be the only thing he’s playing at the fair.

“The biggest gift for us is seeing people come together, and they dance and they sing and they smile and it’s just a place where people can take a break from everything,” said bassist Marley Williams, who, besides rocking crowds, has become pretty good at fair games.

“Being a highly competitive sports nut, I skip all the fair food and go straight to the games and try to win huge stuffed animals,” he said. “That’s my go-to.”

The band is on its 45-stop Good Vibes Tour and will be joined both nights at the fair by Steel Pulse, Denim and DJ Mackle.

The concert series, sponsored by Toyota at the 8,000-capacity outdoor venue, includes dozens of performances. It runs through Sept. 3, with Jackson Browne closing out the summer.

And the members of Rebelution have pretty much become regulars at the Pacific Amphitheatre, with back-to-back shows in recent years.

“Orange County just fits in well for us, and it’s really cool because you obviously got the fair and it seems like it’s a tradition for a lot of people to go check out a Rebelution show and go to the fair and enjoy that summertime vibe and that happiness,” Williams said.

Rebelution, which also includes vocalist-guitarist Eric Rachmany, keyboardist Rory Carey and drummer Wesley Finley, formed in Isla Vista in 2004 and has released seven studio albums and a pair of live albums.

Driven by reggae and fueled by rock as well as folk, hip-hop and jazz, the band has earned a reputation for its passionate and energetic performances and, of course, good vibes spread from the stage.

The Grammy-nominated band has performed at festivals such as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, California Vibrations and One Love Cali Fest in Long Beach.

Rebelution’s live energy is captured on its most recent album, the 23-song “Live in St. Augustine,” which was released in May and recorded in 2021 at a sold-out concert at the St. Augustine Amphitheater in Florida.

Williams said it was a particularly exciting show because just as in California, Florida music fans seem to really dig the band’s style of reggae.

“They really, really love this kind of new wave of reggae music that kind of mixes in rock and hip-hop and R&B into the reggae like we do. There was a lot of energy at that show,” he said.

The live album includes a mix of new and old tunes like “Old School Feeling” and “Satisfied,” from the band’s 2021 album “In the Moment,” as well as classics like “Roots Reggae Music,” “Feeling Alright” and “Fade Away.”

And if you want to catch Williams winning huge stuffed animals after the show, keep an eye out for him near any game where you have to throw a ball or shoot some hoops.

He may even hook someone up with a prize.

“I was hitting three-pointers and stuff at one game and I hooked up a little kid with a big stuffed animal, and I felt like a hero for a second,” Williams said.
