COSTA MESA >> The Chargers signed kicker Cameron Dicker to their practice squad Thursday after Taylor Bertolet injured his quadriceps in practice Wednesday. Bertolet was signed last month after Dustin Hopkins injured his quad making a tackle on a kickoff and then his hamstring while kicking.

It seemed to be a tidy summary on where things stand with the bruised and battered Chargers, who will have their third kicker in three games when they face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Chargers are also likely to be without their two top wide receivers because of injuries.

In addition to probably playing without Keenan Allen, who has a nagging hamstring injury, and Mike Williams (sprained ankle), the Chargers are also without wide receiver Jaylen Guyton (torn ACL), cornerback J.C. Jackson (ruptured patellar tendon) and tackle Rashawn Slater (ruptured biceps) for the rest of the season.

Plus, edge rusher Joey Bosa continues his recovery from a groin tear.

Dicker, known by his “Dicker the Kicker” nickname, became available after the Philadelphia Eagles cut him last week. He made a name for himself in Philly while Jake Elliott recovered from an ankle injury, booting a game-deciding 23-yard field goal in a victory Oct. 9 over the Arizona Cardinals.

Elliott then returned to the lineup for the Eagles’ victories Oct. 16 over the Dallas Cowboys and this past Sunday over the Pittsburgh Steelers. After the Eagles cut Dicker, the Chargers signed him to their practice squad Thursday. They plan to elevate him to the active roster Sunday.

Hopkins injured his quad while making a tackle on a kickoff during the Chargers’ victory Oct. 2 over the Houston Texans. Bertolet, 30, filled in for Hopkins and kicked three field goals and three extra points in his NFL debut in the Chargers’ victory Oct. 9 over the Cleveland Browns.

Hopkins returned to kick in the Chargers’ victory Oct. 17 over the Denver Broncos, booting the winning field goal in overtime after injuring his hamstring earlier in the game. Bertolet then replaced Hopkins during their loss Oct. 23 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, the job falls to Dicker, a 22-year-old who was born in Hong Kong and lived in China until his family returned to the United States when he was 11. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer he began kicking in middle school and earned the “Dicker the Kicker” nickname from a science teacher.

Dicker went on to kick at the University of Texas and was with the Rams during training camp. Philadelphia signed him after Elliott was injured and he wrote a small chapter in what’s been an undefeated season so far with two field goals and two extra points in his NFL debut against the Cardinals.

Palmer update

Wide receiver Joshua Palmer said he would play Sunday against the Falcons after clearing concussion protocol earlier in the week. Palmer was injured on the first play of the Chargers’ game against the Broncos, when he fell backward and hit his head on the SoFi Stadium turf.

Coach Brandon Staley said Wednesday he wouldn’t go so far as to say Palmer or tight end Donald Parham Jr., who also left concussion protocol this week, would be cleared to play Sunday. Palmer took the mystery out of his availability by saying he would play against Atlanta.

The Chargers could use all the help they could get at wide receiver, with Allen and Williams sidelined for a still-to-be-determined period and Guyton not expected back on the practice field until the offseason. Palmer, Michael Bandy, DeAndre Carter, Jason Moore and Joe Reed will make up their receiving corps.

“I think all of those guys have to be ready,” Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said. “We’ll see what happens on game day, but I think there is enough there to be successful. I think everyone who is out there practicing has to be ready — even if you are the last guy on the practice squad.”
