SANTA CRUZ >> Police are investigating the cause of a downtown fatality over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

The Santa Cruz Police Department was called for a man-down report at 2:40 p.m. Saturday near the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue.

According to a press release issued by the agency, investigators have not ruled out outside involvement in the death. Initial reports of the incident indicated the man may have jumped from a window in the building above onto the busy commercial area below.

“The investigation is ongoing regarding the details leading up to the male’s cause of death,” police spokesperson Katie Lee wrote in the release. “Detectives are following up on all possible avenues to determine if there is any evidence of foul play.”

Santa Cruz Police shared a message that resources are available to help community members struggling with mental health crises or who may have witnessed Saturday’s death. Assistance is available by calling the suicide and crisis lifeline at 988 and by visiting santacruzhealth.org/hsahome.
