Top-ranked Vols bounce back, top Longhorns 74-70
Austin, texas>> Zakai Zeigler scored 16 points and No. 1 Tennessee beat Texas 74-70 on Saturday in Austin. It was the Volunteers’ first game since a 30-point blowout loss earlier in the week at No. 8 Florida.
Jordan Gainey’s 3-pointer gave Tennessee a 66-60 lead with 2:41 to play before Zeigler scored the next six points for the Volunteers, including a buzzer-beating reverse layup with 59 seconds left.
No. 2 Auburn 66, South Carolina 63>> Tahaad Pettiford assisted on Dylan Cardwell’s go-ahead dunk and converted two free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining as No. 2 Auburn overcame an injury to leading scorer Johni Broom and rallied to beat South Carolina 66-63 in Columbia.
No. 3 Iowa State 85, Texas Tech 84, OT>> Joshua Jefferson made two free throws with 4.1 seconds left in overtime after forcing it with a buzzer-beating layup and third-ranked Iowa State won their 11th consecutive game. The 14-1 Cyclones beat Texas Tech 85-84. Jefferson finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.
No. 4 Duke 87, Notre Dame 78>> Cooper Flagg scored an Atlantic Coast Conference freshman record 42 points to help No. 4 Duke hold off Notre Dame 86-78 and stay unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The 6-foot-9 preseason Associated Press All-American made 11 of 14 shots, 4 of 6 3-pointers and 16 of 17 foul shots. He also had seven assists and six rebounds.
No. 5 Alabama 94, No. 19 Texas A&M 88>> Mark Sears scored 27 points, Aden Holloway added 15, and No. 5 Alabama beat No. 10 Texas A&M 94-88 in the first game between top 10 teams in College Station history.
The Crimson Tide never trailed in winning their eighth consecutive game. Alabama snapped A&M’s nine-game win streak, the longest by the Aggies since the 2015-16 squad won 10 straight.
No. 6 Kentucky 95, No. 14 Mississippi State 90>> Jaxson Robinson scored a season-high 27 points and No. 6 Kentucky made 16 of 32 3- pointers in a 95-90 victory over No. 14 Mississippi State. Robinson was 7 of 10 from 3-point range and 9 of 12 overall.
No. 8 Florida 71, Arkansas 63>> Alijah Martin scored 14 points and three teammates also scored in double figures as No. 8 Florida defeated Arkansas 71-63 on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Alex Condon, Will Richard and Walton Clayton Jr. scored 12 points apiece for the Gators.
No. 9 Connecticut 68, Georgetown 60>> Alex Karaban scored 19 points, Solo Ball added 15, and No. 9 Connecticut bounced back from its first conference loss of the season to handle Georgetown 68-60 in Washington.
The Huskies, who fell 68-66 at Villanova on Wednesday, have not lost back-to-back league games since January 2023. Curtis Williams Jr. had 15 points for the Hoyas.
No. 11 Kansas 54, Cincinnati 40>> Hunter Dickinson scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. as No. 11 Kansas pulled away from Cincinnati for a 54-40 victory.
The Jayhawks held the Bearcats scoreless for more than six minutes in the second half to spark 14-0 run.
No. 12 Houston 87, Kansas State 57>> Emanuel Sharp scored 15 points, Joseph Tugler had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 12 Houston used two big first-half runs to rout Kansas State 87-57.
LJ Cryer and Ja’Vier Francis added 11 points apiece for the Cougars, who cruised to their eighth straight win in their first trip to Manhattan, Kan., since 1971.
Southern Cal 82, No. 13 Illinois 72>> Desmond Claude scored a season-high 31 points to lead Southern California to an 82-72 win over No. 13 Illinois in Champaign. Wesley Yates III had 15 points — shooting 7 of 8 from the field — while Rashaun Agee had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans.
No. 17 Oklahoma 72, Georgia 62>> Dakota Leffew and Asa Newell each scored 15 points and Georgia held off No. 17 Oklahoma 72-62 for its second consecutive win over a Top 25 team.
No. 19 Memphis 74, East Carolina 70>> PJ Haggerty scored eight of his 25 points in the final 2:34 and No. 19 Memphis held off East Carolina 74-70.
Haggerty shot 7 for 16 from the field and was perfect on 10 free throws, including both ends of a 1-and-1 with 9.7 seconds left to preserve the victory.
No. 23 Mississippi 77, LSU 65>> Malik Dia scored 19 points, Jaemyn Brakefield added 16 and No. 23 Mississippi beat LSU 77-65. The Rebels have won their first three league games for the first time in six years.
