Oklahoma State junior Ethan Fang held off a late charge Saturday with a 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 1-up victory over Gavin Tiernan of Ireland, becoming the first American in 18 years to win the British Amateur.

The match at Royal St. George’s was all square through 31 holes when Fang built a 2-up lead, Tiernan won the next two holes with big putts, and Fang won it on the 36th hole with an approach shot just 5 feet left of the hole.

Tiernan, a sophomore at East Tennessee State, missed well to the left some 45 feet away and grazed the edge of the cup with his long birdie putt, setting the stage for Fang.

Fang, who grew up near Dallas and played his freshman year at Cal, earned a trip to the British Open next month and gets into the Masters at Augusta National next year.

Jimenez shares lead at PGA Tour Champions major >> Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday for a share of the lead with Steven Alker in the Kaulig Companies Championship, the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions.

Seeking his four victory of the year, Jimenez played a five-hole stretch in the middle of the round at Firestone South in 4 under, making birdies on Nos. 7-8 and 10-11. The 61-year-old Spanish star dropped a stroke on the par-3 12th, then parred the final six holes.

Alker, tied for the second-round lead, had a 67 to match Jimenez at 8-under 202.

Lee leads at Women’s PGA Open >> Two-time major champion Minjee Lee took over the lead with the first bogey-free round for anyone during a windy week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, a 3-under 69 in the third round to move four strokes ahead of Jeeno Thitikul.

Lee got to 6-under 210 after beginning the round three strokes behind Thitikul, the world’s No. 2-ranked player who led alone at the end of each of the first two days.

Lee, the Australian who lives in nearby Irving, went in front with a 2-foot par at the 405-yard 12th hole when Thitikul had her second consecutive bogey, and fourth of the day on way to a round of 76.

Reigning NL CY young winner Sale placed on IL >> The Atlanta Braves placed reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale on the 15-day injured list because of a fractured left rib cage.

“He was doing his exercises (Friday) and felt like something wasn’t right,” manager Brian Snitker said before the Braves’ game Saturday against the Miami Marlins. “So they had him looked at and it showed what it showed.”

In his previous start, against the New York Mets on Wednesday, Sale sprinted off the mound and made a diving stop of a grounder hit by Juan Soto and threw him out for the first out in the ninth. He then struck out Pete Alonso and was lifted after allowing a single to Brandon Nimmo.

Sale is 5-4 and has a 2.52 ERA through 15 starts this season.

Giants pitcher Hjelle accused of abuse >> The San Francisco Giants said Major League Baseball is looking into allegations of abuse made by the wife of reliever Sean Hjelle.

Caroline Hjelle made a post on TikTok of her with the couple’s two children with a caption that said: “When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after this (video was taken) once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone.”

The Giants said in a statement Saturday that they are “aware of these serious allegations” and that MLB is handling it.
