A shooting in the parking lot of an El Monte car wash left one man dead Monday night.

It appears to be gang-related, sheriff’s Lt. Michael Modica said.

The shooting in the 2300 block of Peck Road was reported to police around 9:30 p.m., when the car wash was closed.

Two men walked up to the victim and asked him where he was from, Modica said. At least one suspect opened fire.

The two men were last seen heading south on Mountain View Avenue, he said.

The victim died at a hospital.

The medical examiner’s office had not yet identified him; Modica described the victim as an El Monte man in his 20s.

The sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is assisting El Monte police with the investigation.
