Attack on special needs student leads to battery charge

A Chesterton High School student was arrested Friday for battery after he and his brother allegedly knocked down a student with special needs so forcefully the student almost flipped over backward, then smiled as they ran down the hall, according to a police report.
Isiah Hilley, 18, of the 900 block of Beechwood Drive, Chesterton, faces a misdemeanor battery charge and was transported to Porter County Jail, according to Chesterton police.
Police said his brother, a juvenile, also was involved; details on his case were not immediately available.
Police were called shortly before 1 p.m. Friday to the high school, 2125 S. 11th St., about the incident. The student with special needs was walking down the hallway when police said “he was violently knocked to the ground,” the report said.
Hilley and his brother can be seen on video surveillance both lowering their shoulders and rushing into the student, police said. Hilley and his brother made contact with the student, who is “completely unprepared,” police said, as they reportedly struck his midsection, the report said.
“The force of the impact is so forceful that it almost makes (the student) flip completely over backward,” police said, adding the juvenile lands on his back and his belongings scatter around him.
While the student is seen picking up his belongings, police said Hilley and his brother are seen running down the hallway smiling, the report said.
“It is very clear that this is an unprovoked attack (on the student), where Isiah Hilly and his brother targeted (the student) since he was not paying attention to his surroundings,” police said in the report.
The student told police he thought the pair was just running down the hall when they made contact with him, the report said. He told police it hurt when he landed and he had a small rug burn on his left forearm, according to a police report.
