Portugal desperately pressed Italy to find the goal to stay alive at the Women’s European Championship and finally got it in the 89th minute from Diana Gomes to secure a 1-1 draw.

The result sent Spain into the quarterfinals from Group B after its earlier 6-2 rout of Belgium which was eliminated from contention.

Italy was joining Spain in the quarterfinals with a lead taken in the 70th on captain Cristiana Girelli’s high-class curling shot from 20 meters.

Portugal seemed to have a lifeline in the 80th but Diana Silva’s goal was ruled out for an offside spotted after a two-minute video review.

Then Portugal was denied by the crossbar in the 89th when Carole Costa’s firm header came back off into play, before the ball was recycled down the left flank for Gomes to earn a crucial point. Gomes met a low cross with a looping shot that eluded Laura Giuliani’s dive.

Portugal defender Ana Borges was sent off deep into stoppage time.

Italy is still favored to advance, moving up to four points in the group standings. That is three clear of Portugal but also six better in goal difference which is now the tiebreaker between the two.

In Friday’s final round, Italy plays Spain and Portugal faces Belgium. Portugal must find its scoring touch and likely hope free-scoring Spain can beat Italy heavily.

Lightning’s Johnson announces retirement >> Tyler Johnson has announced his retirement after playing 13 NHL seasons and winning the Stanley Cup twice with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Johnson called it a career in a lengthy message posted on social media. Johnson had battled injuries in recent years and is set to turn 35 on July 29.

Listed at 5-foot-8 and 191 pounds, Johnson won at just about ever level, capturing the Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup championships in 2008 with his hometown Spokane Chiefs and the Calder Cup championship with Norfolk of the American Hockey League in 2012.

York re-signs with Flyers >> Cam York and the Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to terms on a five-year contract worth $25.75 million.

York will count $5.15 million against the salary cap through the 2029-30 NHL season. That price could turn out to be a bargain with the upper limit rising from $88 million this past season to $113.5 million by 2027-28.

Sportsnet in Canada was first to report the agreement.

York, the 14th pick in the 2019 draft, has skated nearly 21 minutes a game so far in his pro career, all with Philadelphia. He has 77 points in 235 games for the Flyers, who have not made the playoffs since 2020.

Orioles, Yankees make a trade >> The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees after Gary Sánchez became their fourth catcher on the injured list.

Sánchez left Saturday night’s game against Atlanta with right knee pain and an MRI revealed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez’s recovery.

Baltimore, which has 14 players on the IL, sent the Yankees $250,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash.

Schwarber, Alonso to skip Home Run Derby >> New York Mets slugger and two-time winner Pete Alonso joined Philadelphia designated hitter Kyle Schwarber in electing to skip the Home Run Derby.

The derby will be held next Monday, the night before the All-Star Game, at Truist Park in Atlanta. Both told reporters of their decision Sunday.

The hitters so far who have committed to the event are Nationals outfielder James Wood, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

Astros’ Walker placed on Paternity leave >> The Houston Astros placed first baseman Christian Walker on paternity leave before the start of a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians.

Walker, who is in his first season with the Astros, is batting .231 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs. He’s heated up recently after a slow start and has hit .429 with two homers and eight RBIs in six games this month.

The AL West-leading Astros recalled outfielder Kenedy Corona from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his spot on the roster.

Boxing

46-year-old Hatton to make comeback >> Ricky Hatton, the 46-year-old former two-weight world champion, will return to the ring to fight in the United Arab Emirates in December, 13 years after he retired.

The Manchester native, who turns 47 in October, will face Eisa Al Dah in Dubai on Dec. 2, it has been announced.

Hatton (45-3) has not fought since losing in his last comeback bout to Vyacheslav Senchenko in November 2012.
