La Verne is working to change the timing for city elections to better align with state and county elections.

Prior to 2020, the city held elections in odd-numbered years. That year, the city moved elections to March in even years.

The city later moved its elections to June during nonpresidential election years to align with the state, according to city officials.

City elections would now be held the Tuesday following the first Monday in November of even-numbered years.

The City Council voted unanimously for the change at a May 19 meeting, and the matter is headed to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for final approval. Implementation would be 30 days after the board’s approval.

By moving elections to November, the nomination period for candidates would be from early July to early August.

Council members who were elected in June 2022 would have a five-month extension of their current term, until December 2026. Those elected in March 2024 would also have an extension, until December 2028, according to the city.
