Discussion with National Book Award Finalist

Cabrillo College, 6500 Soquel Drive, will host a conversation with National Book Award Finalist Dr. Jason De León at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in Room 450. His talk, “Uncovering the Stories of the U.S./Mexico Border,” will be followed by a Q&A and a viewing of the memorial exhibit Hostile Terrain 94, which documents migrant deaths in Arizona, at Cabrillo’s Library. His book “Soldiers and Kings” has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 National Book Award in Nonfiction.

Group to hold free film screening

Join Santa Cruz YIMBY, in partnership with Housing Santa Cruz County, People First and the UCSC Student Housing Coalition, for a free advance screening of “Fault Lines” at the Resource Center For Nonviolence, 612 Ocean St., Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

A compelling documentary, ready to debut on the film festival circuit, “Fault Lines” examines the housing crisis in San Francisco, yet its themes strongly reflect the challenges also faced in Santa Cruz. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with Elaine Johnson of Housing Santa Cruz County, Corey Mosley of People First of Santa Cruz County and other local housing advocates. Punk rock Día de Los Muertos show

The 418 Project at 155 S. River St., will be hosting “A Very DIY Punk/Rock Día de Los Muertos Benefit Show” from 7-11 p.m. Nov. 1. If you love punk and rock music and want to support and celebrate the local Latinx and artist communities, join the DIY benefit show centered on fun, high-energy music and togetherness.

Local artists will feature Maria & Johnny with Brazilian music, Latin punk band Fulminante, progressive rock band The Cohesion and The Mutilations, known for psychedelic garage rock. Face paint and accessories will be available at the venue, but attendees are encouraged to wear own festive attire.

Senior center to hold benefit dance

The Mid County Senior Center at 829 Bay Ave., is set to throw a benefit dance/concert 7-9 p.m. Friday, featuring The Plateau Jazz Band, known for their “Prohibition Era Jazz” style.

Neighbors for Neighbors set to hold meetup

Catch the monthly Neighbors for Neighbors meetup at the Capitola Library, 2005 Wharf Road, starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 22. In partnership with Santa Cruz Public Libraries, the topic for the month is A Housing First Conversation: Housing for a Healthy Santa Cruz County.

Library to host state proposition forum

November’s state ballot includes 10 propositions on everything from building schools to prisons, rent control and drug crime penalties. When you receive your ballot, be an educated voter by attending a free forum from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 at the at the Downtown Library’s Community Room, 224 Church St., Santa Cruz, where all state ballot measures will be presented with pros and cons by the League of Women Voters Santa Cruz County.
