SANTA CRUZ >> With a citywide Safety Enhancement Zone enforced from Friday to Monday, the Santa Cruz police and fire departments reported no significant incidents of fire or violent crime over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The establishment of the Safety Enhancement Zone in Santa Cruz over the weekend meant that fines were tripled for civil infractions such as the illegal discharge of fireworks, excessive noise and public consumption of alcohol, among others.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department and police department were fully staffed during the weekend and responded to 295 calls for service on the Fourth of July alone, according to a statement.
Among the calls for service Friday, 12 individuals were arrested for offenses including public intoxication, driving under the influence and outstanding warrants. In total, Santa Cruz police issued 20 citations on the Fourth of July for fireworks, traffic violations and alcohol-related crimes.
According to the statement, fireworks violations occurred in neighborhoods on the east and west sides of the city, and officers responded directly to areas where aerial fireworks were reported.
