Community center presents annual iris show

The Monterey Bay Iris Society will present its annual iris show from 1-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the London Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz. The show is free and open to the public. Iris growers from all over the Bay Area bring their finest blooms to the show and they are judged by the judges from the American Iris Society.

Santa Cruz Orchid Society holds monthly meeting

The May Orchid Society Program begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Live Oak Grange, 1900 17th Ave., Santa Cruz. Setup begins at 7 p.m.

Ken Jacobson will speak on “The Oncidium Crispum Group” and will cover the various Brazilian Oncidiums, their hybrids and their culture. This is a group of orchids that’s largely ignored by hobbyists, despite the fact that they’re relatively easy to grow, and have beautiful blooms.

Regenerative soil techniques workshop on deck

UC Master Gardeners of Monterey and Santa Cruz counties along with Sierra Azul Nursery are providing a free workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19 at Sierra Azul Nursery, 2660 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville.

Learn regenerative soil techniques for the home gardener. Growing healthy soil helps the home gardener grow vibrant veggies and herbs, bountiful fruit trees and gorgeous flowers. A summary of what makes soil regenerative, and a demonstration of proven techniques such as cover cropping, vermicomposting, lasagna beds and straw bale gardening.

Symphony garden tour fundraiser slated June 1-2

Santa Cruz Symphony League is hosting the Home & Garden Tour at noon June 1 and at 4:30 p.m. June 2 at Soquel Congregational Church, 4951 Soquel Drive, Soquel. Five beautiful homes open their doors only for the symphony. View spectacular gardens and outdoor entertainment areas in full bloom. The event includes a Home & Garden Tour Magazine.

Demonstration garden plans grand opening

UC Master Gardeners of Monterey and Santa Cruz counties is having a garden party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 1 at Pinto Lake County Park, 757 Green Valley Road, Watsonville.

The event is free. This is a family-friendly celebration to welcome the community to the new demonstration garden. The event features food, music, demonstrations, a plant sale, activities for the children and more. The demonstration garden was established to provide hands-on community education for sustainable gardening practices.
