


Help us choose our high school Athletes of the Week
Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) Athlete of the Week poll.
For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.
This week, we consider performances from April 29-May 3.
Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Vote as many times as you’d like until then at mercurynews.com and eastbaytimes.com without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.
Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.
Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.
Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.
We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday. We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.
On to the nominees:
GIRLS
Sawyer Bohlig, Miramonte lacrosse: The junior had a combined 10 goals and seven assists in a 17-11 win over Campolindo and a 15-5 rout of Northgate. She began this week with 67 goals and 35 assists on the season, ranking among the NCS leaders, per stats reported to MaxPreps.
Jada Crockett, Sequoia softball: In a 7-5 victory over Half Moon Bay, the senior homered, walked twice and scored two runs. In the pitching circle, she struck out 11 as the Ravens extended their winning streak to seven games.
Daniela Hughes, Los Altos track and field: Finished first in three events and second in another at the SCVAL De Anza Division finals. Won the 100 hurdles in 14.32 seconds after clocking a CCS-leading 14.24 in the trials. Also won the triple jump in 37-10 (she leads CCS at 38-10) and ran a leg on the 4x100 relay, which won in a CCS-leading 48.13. Took second in the 200 in 24.68.
Kyleigh Mace, Archbishop Mitty softball: The junior struck out 16 and scattered three hits and two walks to help lift Mitty to a 2-1 victory at home over Sacred Heart Cathedral in a West Catholic Athletic League game. Sacred Heart Cathedral’s run was unearned.
Dominique Neville, Hillsdale lacrosse: The senior had 11 goals and five assists in victories over Castilleja, Priory and Burlingame. She began this week with 58 goals and 13 assists on the season.
Ellie Novitske, Foothill softball: The senior homered, doubled, drove in four runs and scored twice to power Foothill to a 16-6 rout of Livermore in an East Bay Athletic League game. Novitske ended the week batting .547 for the season.
Sophia Ocanas, Gunderson softball: The freshman’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the seventh completed a wild comeback as Gunderson rallied from a five-run deficit to edge Independence 6-5 in a Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division game. Ocanas finished the week batting .500 for the season.
Juliana Pandolfo, Menlo-Atherton softball: The sophomore capped a 3-for-4 game with a double that drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Bears defeated South San Francisco 7-6. Pandolfo finished with two RBIs and scored a run. She entered this week batting .632 (36 for 57).
Andrea Tall, Newark Memorial softball: The senior homered and scored two runs to help the Cougars win on the road over James Logan 8-6 in a battle for first place in the Mission Valley Athletic League. Tall began this week hitting a team-best .609 (39 for 64) with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs.
Mia Wong, Alameda softball: The sophomore went 4 for 4 with two doubles, knocked in four runs and scored two runs as the Hornets rolled to a 10-0 victory over Bishop O’Dowd in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. Alameda began this week 13-8-1 on the season.
BOYS
Hayden Burton, Oakland Tech baseball: The senior drove in the tying run to help lead Oakland Tech to a 6-5 win over Skyline. The Bulldogs won the Oakland Athletic League regular-season championship with the victory. Burton finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and pitched six innings with six strikeouts.
Kai Chung, Menlo swimming: The sophomore won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly at the West Bay Athletic League championships.
DJ Delaney, St. Ignatius baseball: Delaney hit a walk-off single to lead St. Ignatius to a 2-1 win over Valley Christian. St. Ignatius (14-8-2) is scheduled to play St. Francis today.
Chayce Formosa, Liberty baseball: Formosa struck out 10 in a complete-game performance to lead Liberty to a 4-1 win over Pittsburg. Liberty (13-6, 6-0) sits atop the Bay Valley Athletic League standings.
Luis He, Mission San Jose track and field: The junior took first place in the 400-meter race at the It’s Always Sunny in Union City meet with a time of 51.41.
Bennett Nishikawa, Live Oak lacrosse: Nishikawa scored four goals and had an assist in Live Oak’s 18-4 win over Carmel. Live Oak is 11-4 this season.
Luke Ornelas, Terra Nova baseball: Ornelas, a senior, went 3 for 3 and knocked in a run in Terra Nova’s 3-2 victory against Aragon. Terra Nova is 15-5-1 this season.
Austin Price, Silver Creek track and field: The senior won the high jump at the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division finals, jumping 5-8.
Jack Richardson, Northgate lacrosse: The senior scored 10 goals in wins against Miramonte and College Park. Northgate will play San Marin in its regular-season finale today.
Owen Seidel, Castro Valley baseball: Seidel struck out nine and allowed one hit to lead Castro Valley to a 2-0 win over Encinal. Castro Valley (17-5, 7-1) can win the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division regular-season title by splitting its final series against Alameda this week.
Alex Tran, Piedmont Hills baseball: The senior went 3 for 3, knocked in two runs and scored twice in Piedmont Hills’ 8-7 comeback win over Sobrato. Piedmont Hills (14-8) has won its last six games.
