


A pair of local wrestlers, San Lorenzo Valley High junior Gabriel Attia and Aptos High sophomore Cruz Contreras, met their goals of earning a win at the CIF State Championships at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield on Friday.
Attia (285 pounds) went 2-2, and Contreras (125) went 1-2.
Attia was pinned in 3:48 by Troy Ceja of Pitman in the Round of 32, pinned Joaquin Rodriguez of Ripon in 3:33 and Isaac Le of Burton in 1:00 in consolation action, and was eliminated with his fall in 4:31 to Chad Troxler of Liberty Bakersfield in the Consolation Round of 16 No. 2.
Contreras was pinned in 1:14 by No. 1 Ronnie Ramirez of Walnut in the Round of 32, earned a 16-5 major decision over Micah Wegman of Calabasas in the Consolation Round of 16 No. 1, and was eliminated after suffering a 19-2 tech fall loss to Bryce Pasvogel of Clovis North in the Consolation Round of 16 No. 2.
NBA G League
Memphis 115, at Santa Cruz 109 >> Forward Blake Hinson scored 25 points, but the Warriors fell short of the Hustle in the teams’ NBA G League game at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday night.
Forward Javan Johnson scored 21 points for the Warriors (12-9). Guard Yuri Collins, on assignment from Golden State, had 16 points and 13 assists, and forward Donta Scott added 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Guard Cameron Parker rounded out the offensive effort with 13 points.
Forward/center Armando Bacot scored a game-high 34 points and pulled down 25 rebounds for the Hustle (11-10).
Guard/forward Nate Hinton and guard Malachi Smith each scored 16 points. Hinton also had 11 rebounds and seven assists. Forward Miles Norris scored 15 points and guard DJ Steward tallied 12 points and seven assists.
The teams square off again at KP Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
10-day contract >> Golden State Warriors signed 6-foot-7 forward Kevin Knox II to a second 10-day contract.
Knox signed his first 10-day contract with Golden State on Feb. 19. The 25-year-old has appeared in four games for the Warriors since signing, tallying 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal in 29 minutes while shooting 52.9% from the field on 17 shot attempts.
Men’s basketball
Christopher Newport 84, UC Santa Cruz 78 >> Ian McCloskey scored a team-high 19 points, but the No. 4 seed Banana Slugs suffered a season-ending loss to the No. 1 Captains in the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday in Salisbury, Maryland.
Zino Okah had 13 points and seven rebounds for UCSC (12-13), and reserve Caden Breznikar had 13 points and three rebounds.
Jahn Hines scored 17 points and all five starters reached double digits in scoring for the Captains (22-4).
Women’s basketball
Christopher Newport 76, UCSC 50 >> Emilie Ngo had 17 points and five rebounds, but the No. 4 seed Banana Slugs suffered a season-ending loss to the No. 1 Captains in the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Alexa Litchev had 14 points and nine rebounds for UCSC (8-17).
Camille Malagar scored 15 points to lead the Captains (25-1).
UCSC beat No. 5 Mount Mary 77-33 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Claire Galbo led the way with 17 points and fellow Slug Alyssa Jackson scored 16 points.
High school baseball
Soquel 11, at Carmel 4; 6 inn. >> Sam Whelan, Connor Corlett, and Brady Downs each had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored in the Knights’ nonleague win Friday.
Enzo Goff and Noah Piona each scored twice for Soquel. Luke Shoemaker pitched three innings and earned the win.
Soquel (2-0) host Woodside (0-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
At Menlo-Atherton 7, Scotts Valley 3 >> The Falcons (0-2) totaled six hits in their nonleague loss Thursday.
Boys volleyball
North Salinas 3, at Scotts Valley 1 >> Senior outside hitter Raith Wallwork had 16 digs, 21 perfect passes, two aces, and two kills in the Falcons’ 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 25-18 nonleague loss Friday.
Junior setter Troy Thompson had 19 assists, five digs, and three perfect passes for the Falcons (1-1), and junior middle Devin Bloom had two kills, three blocks, and two perfect passes.
Scotts Valley hosts Kirby on Monday at 6 p.m.
At Harbor 3, Carmel 0 >> The Pirates (2-0) recorded their second straight sweep, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18, on Thursday.
Harbor beat host Salinas 25-15, 26-24, 25-17 in its season opener Tuesday. Junior Josh Rejfir had 11 kills and 10 digs, and classmate Cooper Lastition had 10 kills.
College softball
Cabrillo splits DH >> The Seahawks earned a split in their nonconference doubleheader against visiting Butte on Friday, losing 7-6 and winning 2-1.
Cameron Llamas had two hits and a run scored in the Seahawks’ victory. Brooklyn Llamas and Morgan DeVillires each had a hit and one RBI, and Alanna Poklong had a hit and run scored. Pitcher Rachel Hafer earned the complete-game win.
Brisea Rivera had three hits and scored twice in the Seahawks’ loss. Madi Tara had two hits and four RBI. Bella Fromel and Charileen Pauneto each had two hits and a run scored. Pauneto also had one RBI. DeVillires pitched three innings and took the loss.
Cabrillo (2-13-1) opens Coast Conference play at Hartnell (5-8-1) on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Beach volleyball
Harbor 5, at Notre Dame San Jose 0 >> The Pirates won all five matches in straights sets at Valley Church Courts in Cupertino on Friday.
Harbor earned wins from Isla Johnson and Maren O’Farrell (21-6, 21-3), Tea Stockwell and Grace Stryker (21-6, 21-17), Liberty Niessen and Dylan Schutz (21-8, 21-7), Cecile Novembre and Lise Corstorphine (21-12, 21-9), and Coco Castro and Marina Tucker (21-8, 21-11).
Harbor (1-0) plays at Notre Dame Belmont on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Taylor Wilson, Gigi Gauthier, and Chloe Kent each scored three runs for the Falcons.
