Hamill lends his voice to Ukraine’s resistance
“Attention. Air raid alert,” the voice says with a Jedi knight’s gravitas. “Proceed to the nearest shelter.”
It’s a surreal moment in an already surreal war: the grave but calming baritone of actor Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker of “Star Wars,” urging people to take cover whenever Russia unleashes another aerial bombardment on Ukraine.
The intrusion of Hollywood science-fiction fantasy into the grim daily realities of war in Ukraine is a consequence of Hamill’s decision to lend his famous voice to “Air Alert” — a downloadable app linked to Ukraine’s air defense system. When air raid sirens start howling, the app also warns Ukrainians that Russian missiles, bombs and deadly exploding drones may be incoming.
“Don’t be careless,” Hamill’s voice advises. “Your overconfidence is your weakness.”
Renner shows off strides in recovery on treadmill
Jeremy Renner is continuing on his road of recovery and taking his followers along with him.
The “Mayor of Kingstown” star posted on the Instastories portion of his verified Instagram account over the weekend and shared a video in which he was doing physical therapy on an anti-gravity treadmill.
Renner can be heard saying the machine allows him to only feel “40% of my weight” while walking.
According to the Running Physio site, such treadmills “feature a bubble that inflates with air, then surrounds the user’s lower body. This gently lifts them off the treadmill which reduces pressure on the lower body.”
The actor was crushed by a snowplow he had been operating on New Year’s Day near his Nevada home.
Prince Harry in UK court in phone hacking case
Prince Harry returned to a London court Tuesday for a second day of hearings to see if the phone hacking lawsuit he brought with Elton John and other celebrities can withstand a challenge from the publisher of The Daily Mail.
The case is one of several brought by the Duke of Sussex in his battle with the media and alleges the publisher hired private investigators to illegally bug homes and cars and to record phone conversations.
Associated Newspapers Ltd. denies the allegations and is seeking to throw out the case, arguing that the claims are too old and rely on information they turned over in confidentiality for a 2012 probe into media law breaking. Actresses Liz Hurley and Sadie Frost, and John’s husband, David Furnish, are also parties to the case.
The suit alleges Associated Newspapers commissioned the “breaking and entry into private property” and other acts.
