John "Gus" Guthrie passed away, peacefully, at home, with his daughters by his side. He was born and raised in East Norwalk, Connecticut to Mabel and Jack Guthrie. He was the eldest of three, including his two sisters, Barbara and Carole. Gus graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in 1950. Throughout his career, he captained several Coast Guard cutters: The Cartigan, The Firebush, The Kukui, The Boutwell and The Staten Island. He met his wife, Win, in 1960, and married the following year. They welcomed three children: Kathleen, Douglas, and Lynne. Gus completed his 30 year Coast Guard career in Honolulu, Hawaii, as the Inspector General for the entire Pacific region. He was a quiet, unassuming, and honest man, who was respected by his crew, and peers, alike. In 1997, after 25 years of living in Honolulu, Gus and Win moved to Santa Cruz, California, to be closer to family. They were both very active, volunteering in the community. Especially close to Gus' heart, was his church: Calvary Episcopal, where he ran the food pantry, and served as layperson during the 8 o'clock service. Gus was preceded in death, by his wife, Win, who passed away March 2020, just short of their 60th wedding anniversary. He spent the last six years of his life in Scotts Valley, CA, at Brookdale Assisted Living, in a spacious apartment, where he remained healthy, independent and loved. Gus is survived by his three children: Kathleen, Douglas, and Lynne; his two grandchildren, Jack and Grace, his sister, Carole, son in law, Mike, and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Gus will be terribly missed and never forgotten. He truly was an officer and a gentleman, who was generous and kind to everyone hemet. Per his request, his final resting place will be in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) overlooking his beloved Pacific Ocean.
