An intruder grabbed a 13-year-old Arcadia boy, entered his home and fatally shot the teen’s 61-year-old father in the chest during a shootout Tuesday night, an investigator said.

The suspect, described only as a man, hadn’t been found yet.

“Some of the evidence leads investigators to believe this was a targeted attack,” sheriff’s Lt. Steven De Jong said.

It happened in the 50 block of Woodland Lane shortly before 6:30 p.m., when the mother and son arrived home, got out of their car and were walking into the house when the man approached them from the street, grabbed the boy and entered via the garage, De Jong said.

“The mother, from what we understand, was pleading with the suspect not to do anything (to the son),” he said.

The suspect and the boy’s father, who had armed himself, shot at each other, De Jong said.

The lieutenant didn’t know if the suspect, who fled, was hit.

The son, who was treated for minor injuries, dialed 911.

The medical examiner’s office had not yet publicly identified the father.

It’s unknown at this time if anything was stolen from the house, De Jong said.

Woodland Lane is a tree-lined street with houses with big front yards.
