



A section of downtown New Haven was closed to traffic Tuesday night as authorities investigated a train-pedestrian fatality, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to Main and Victoria streets about 8:45 p.m. after receiving a report of a crash involving a train. When they arrived, deputies located the victim suffering from critical injuries.
The deputies performed life-saving measures, including CPR, to the male, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richmond Lenox EMS and the New Haven Fire Department also responded to the scene. The train stopped while the Sheriff’s Office conducted their investigation into the incident.
Later, the sheriff’s office announced the roadway had been reopened. No other information on the crash were immediately available. The sheriff’s office stated more details will be shared when they become available.
Michigan saw 76 crashes involving trains in 2023, according to the latest statistics from Michigan State Police. Three of those were fatal and resulted in three deaths.
The number of crashes in Michigan involving trains has been on the rise, according to MSP data. The number of crashes totaled 53 in 2019, dipped to 35 in 2020, but then jumped to 56 in 2021 and 65 in 2022.
Macomb County recorded one train crash, which resulted in a single train crash fatality in 2023, State Police statistics said. The year before, the county also recorded one train crash, but there were no fatalities.
